Michigan teen in Colin Kaepernick Nike ad is feeling some backlash
Alicia Woollcott made national headlines last year as a senior at Grand Blanc High School. She was a linebacker on the football team and was named homecoming queen by her classmates. It was the kind of feel-good story that everybody could get behind. A year later, Woollcott is in the national spotlight again as one of a handful of athletes featured in a powerful and controversial Colin Kaepernick Nike ad. The reaction has been mixed, though mostly positive for Woollcott. She's shrugged off some 'interesting' comments via Facebook, but stands by the commercial: "You have your group of people that don't agree with it and are boycotting it but also people are agreeing with the message because it's a good commercial. It's a good message." MORE

Historically black neighborhood is hottest housing market in Ann Arbor

There was a time, not too long ago, when realtors could openly refuse to show black people houses in certain neighborhoods. In Ann Arbor in the 1950s and '60s, that meant black residents mainly were relegated to living in Kerrytown or Water Hill, neighborhoods just north of downtown. Fair housing practices eventually allowed black people the option of moving elsewhere, and the black population in the neighborhoods decreased from 45 percent to 25 percent. Today, much has changed from those in traditionally black areas, much to the lament of former residents.

Youth movement among 10 things to watch at Red Wings camp
hat
The Detroit Red Wings open training camp Friday in Traverse City. With the franchise squarely in the middle of a rebuild, all eyes will be on the youngsters. They hold the key to any future success, especially with Henrik Zetterberg's days seemingly numbered. (At the very least, Z will miss training camp and the start of the season due to back issues.) The Red Wings have plenty of young talent. However, that talent needs to develop into viable NHL players. (Then Stevie Y can return and help bring back the glory days to Hockeytown!)
