December 10, 2020 Before the state of Michigan extended its pause of high school sports, the MHSAA had a plan. It presented government officials with a plan that would have enabled football, volleyball and girls swimming and diving teams to complete their seasons by the end of December. Its plan included a mask mandate for athletes and a ban on spectators. But after what MHSAA executive director Mark Uyl describes as merely a "courtesy call" a few minutes before the governor’s Monday press conference announcing an extension to the pause on sports instead of a plan to resume, the group is more than frustrated. The future of the remaining fall sports tournaments and the entirety of the winter season remains in limbo. It was approved by the Plymouth-Canton Community Schools Board of Education this week. The policy is aimed at providing a “more safe, welcoming environment to all of our students... especially those who are often marginalized, bullied and assaulted at higher rates,” said Patti McCoin, school board president.
