Gov. Gretchen Whitmer unveils $61.9 billion budget plan with school funding increases

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer presented her 2020 budget proposal Thursday. The $61.9 billion plan is highlighted by an increase to funding for Michigan schools. Whitmer's plan ups the School Aid budget by nearly 5 percent, with proposed increases to per-pupil funding for all schools, while giving a bigger boost to the lowest-funded districts. Other increases in the plan would go to environmental cleanup funding, university and college funding and the reinstatement of funds for Pure Michigan. Money for roads, the biggest issue addressed in Whitmer's 2019 proposal, was not a focus this year. MORE
