Grand Rapids restaurant takes on city in clash over excessive signage
Is it a sincere tribute? Is it an ingenious marketing ploy? Is it both? Brann's Steakhouse & Grille on Grand Rapids' West Side is clashing with the city over its flags and banners. Owner Johnny Brann says the outside signage, which honors fallen police officers and military personnel, should be granted a variance based on their content. The city is not concerned with content. It says it simply is enforcing an ordinance against excessive signage. Inevitably, the issue has turned political, with MLive commenters split on the matter. Some are saying the city is infringing on a business owner's rights, while others are asking why the restaurant should be allowed to break the rules. We find it is yet another Rubin's vase situation. What do you see: A vase or two faces? MORE

Gun owners frustrated by conflicting conceal carry laws

Concealed weapons permit holders face potential conflicts when traveling from state to state. Since conceal carry laws are regulated by individual states, what might be OK in one state might prove criminal in another. For instance, an Ohioan with a concealed carry license can go to Michigan, but might run into problems in Illinois. The latest "Guns: An American Conversation" discussion takes a look at the complex web of state laws and interstate reciprocity agreements in place that regulate concealed carry licenses. MORE

Detroit Lions depth chart updated with draft additions

It really is something how much news the NFL produces during the offseason. Coming off the heels of last week's 2018 NFL Draft, our Detroit Lions beat writers Kyle Meinke and Nate Atkins remain swamped with a plethora of storylines to follow. We're highlighting a pair of their posts here: Meinke's updated Lions depth chart features just one rookie. Atkins addresses the Lions' lack of defensive draft picks this year with a sneak peek at next year's draft. (Hint: Lots of depth on the D-line is expected next year.) MORE

Motor City Nightmares draws stars, fans and cosplayers

The Motor City Nightmares expo and film festival last weekend in Novi was like Halloween in April. MLive cosplay beat writer Ed Pevos was on scene, and compiled a robust gallery of attendees. We understand cosplay isn't for everyone, and that is fine. However, we certainly appreciate the artistry on display. (Case in point: The person in this picture did the face art herself!) And, really, what is not to love about a bunch of self-described nerds getting together and sharing their love of cool things? Nothing. That's what. MORE
