When high water kills: Drownings on Great Lakes soar in 2019
 
The Great Lakes are experience some of the highest water ever recorded. Downing deaths in the Great Lakes this summer have seen a dramatic spike from a year ago. The two facts are almost assuredly related. Said one Ludington area firefighter who responded to three drownings during a recent one week period: "When you get to the third one, it really puts a damper on your spirits. The family is all there and they're just hoping for the best. And you know that it's becoming a body recovery." MORE

Lake Erie algae bloom now covers an area larger than Metro Detroit
 
The algae bloom in Lake Erie is showing no signs of slowing down. The most recent growth spike has the bloom covering about 620 square miles. And, just like the headline says, that is an area greater than the size of Metro Detroit and suburbs.
