Let's get festive, Michigan |
Is it to early to start spreading holiday cheer? From a downtown light parade in Traverse City to holiday home tours in Bay City, seasonal festivities are in full swing across Michigan. Ludington, Manistee and other little towns in Northern Michigan are gearing up to celebrate the holidays with events like Victorian Sleigh Bell Weekend and Aglow on the Avenue. MLive reporter Justine Lofton has a roundup of holiday events coming to Up North small towns. Want to take a break from whipping up holiday meals? These Kalamazoo-area restaurants are staying open on Thanksgiving. |

His brother was killed inside a Michigan cult 40 years ago. He speaks out for the first time. |
The death of 12-year-old John Yarbough exposed the House of Judah, a band of “Black Hebrew Israelites,” as a violent cult led by a self-proclaimed prophet William A. Lewis at a secluded camp in southwest Allegan County. Now, 40 years after his brother’s killing, Daniel Yarbough is sharing his story for the first time: the horrors of the cult, devastation to families, including his own, his trials as he worked to erase the deep hate he learned at a young age – and later, to find God. More in crime: A former Ann Arbor and Jackson-area priest who pleaded guilty to sexually abusing an altar boy in the 1980s has been sentenced for his crimes. |

Judge to decide if Michigan can boot Trump from primary ballot |
In limbo: The Michigan Court of Appeals will soon decide whether former President Donald Trump will remain eligible for Michigan’s 2024 ballot – though even the presiding judge on the issue noted it is unlikely he will have the last word on the subject. Civic duty: Sixteen-year-olds will be able to preregister to vote under a bill headed to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer for her signature. Michigan already allows eligible people 17.5-years-old to register to vote in preparation for the first election in which they would be 18. This bill extends that to Michiganders as young as 16. More politics: After striking down nearly three dozen proposed changes, Michigan’s House passed legislation that would lay out financial disclosure requirements for election officials and candidates. |

Michigan’s weekend may have appearances by the sun |
Possibly sunny: This weekend will have fairly nice weather for early November. The temperatures won’t be out of line on the cold side or the warm side. Here’s a quick look at the radar forecast for this weekend. Speaking of weather: The Up North weather forecast this weekend looks calm. Precipitation chances are few and far between, with lake effect being the main precipitation driver over the weekend. Temperatures are going to be on the chilly side throughout the weekend. Collecting data: The NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory is testing out new weather buoys that can stay in the water all year long. And while they’re floating out there in the cold water, they’ll be collecting data. |

Tigers hire new lead TV announcer from White Sox |
New voice: The Detroit Tigers just poached one of the country’s top baseball announcers from a division rival. The Tigers have hired Jason Benetti as the club’s new lead play-by-play announcer on television broadcasts. Game time: As great as the Lions have been in punt return yards, they face a tough test this Sunday when they face the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium. When it comes to returning punts, the Chargers are among the league’s best. Champion: Three-time Olympian rower Ellen Tomek has been elected to the Greater Flint Area Sports Hall of Fame. |

Dam it, they’re back! Beavers return to creek at University of Michigan |
Making a comeback: The University of Michigan's Matthaei Botanical Gardens staff members have discovered a dam across Fleming Creek. They determined and stated in a Facebook post that it’s the first time beavers have been in the area since the gardens were established in 1907. In the sky: The annual Northern Taurids meteor shower, known for its colorful meteors and fireballs, will be reaching peak activity this weekend. What’s more, the moon will be nearly dark, creating optimal conditions for night-sky viewing. Not a star: An unlikely new object is shining in the night sky: A tool bag. The tool bag accidentally floated away from two NASA astronauts during a spacewalk for maintenance outside the International Space Station on Nov. 1, according to a NASA. |
