What's the weather like this week? |
It’s going to be a very warm week ahead, at least for this time of year. The warmth this week will make a short-lived plummet in temperatures feel like a shocker. Today will warm into the 40s. Wednesday and Thursday should have many cities warming into the 50s. Friday we get a wind switch and start to cool down after morning temperatures in the 40s. The long-range forecasters at NOAA have issued a regularly-scheduled new spring forecast. They have some strong reasoning to make us believe this spring will be warmer than normal. |

Homelessness jumped in 10 Michigan counties. What’s being done about it? |
In Northern Michigan, only two permanent, year-round homeless shelters serve 10 counties. And this winter, the shelters are at capacity. Going over the numbers: More people are experiencing homelessness in the northwest corner of Michigan as affordable housing has become harder to find. The region saw homelessness increase by 56% from 2021 to 2022, going from 940 to 1,471 people. That’s the biggest jump in the state compared to 47% in the Upper Peninsula, 31% in the Detroit area and 21% in West Michigan. Here is what’s being done about it. In the Jordan River, imperiled lake whitefish are thrown a lifeline |
Can lake whitefish, an imperiled mainstay of the Great Lakes fishery, learn to reproduce in northern Michigan rivers? Fishery managers think so. A species restoration effort: This month, 100,000 whitefish eggs were placed in the Jordan River as part of an experimental effort by The Nature Conservancy in Michigan and state tribes, which hope that after the eggs hatch mature fish will eventually return to spawn. May be delisted: The EPA is proposing to delete a 6-acre portion of the Allied Paper, Inc./Portage Creek/Kalamazoo River site in Kalamazoo County from the Superfund National Priorities List -- which is the list of the most contaminated sites in the nation. |

Jury awards $10 million to man wrongly convicted of murder when evidence was withheld |
The Associated Press reports: A jury awarded $10 million to a Michigan man who spent almost six years behind bars for a murder he did not commit before the conviction was thrown out at the request of prosecutors. Alexandre Ansari’s constitutional rights were violated, the jury said in federal court. A Detroit police detective had concealed evidence in the fatal shooting of 15-year-old Ileana Cuevas for fear of his family’s safety. In crime: A former manager of a Fresh Thyme grocery store is facing charges for allegedly embezzling $750,000 from the self-checkout kiosks. |

Early morning explosion destroys house in Ann Arbor |
On South Seventh Street: An Ann Arbor home was destroyed in an explosion Monday morning, though no one was seriously injured, officials said. With the house basically collapsed in the basement and smoldering, the fire department was on the scene for hours. More info: Neighbors nearby reported hearing a loud boom and feeling their homes shake during the explosion. Officials believe that the man was using propane to heat the house, which may have caused the blast. The fire department strongly advises against heating a house with propane. In sports: Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton sat down with Taylor Rooks of The Bleacher Report. The two-time NBA All-Star expressed his sentiments regarding the Detroit Pistons' decision not to select him with the No. 7 overall pick in the 2020 NBA draft. |
