October 26, 2021 As the nation looks closely to Haiti where 17 U.S.-based missionaries were recently kidnapped, a small West Michigan town prays and waits anxiously for the safe return of several of their own. Residents of Hart, Michigan, are relying on one another and their faith to get them through this international ordeal where a mother and her four children are among the kidnapping victims. More than 100 people gathered together on Sunday to pray and sing in support of the kidnapped missionaries. People in the rural town, just a short drive from Lake Michigan, have a strong sense of community, the city’s mayor told MLive. Everyone knows everyone, and everyone cares about each other, Mayor Vicki Platt said. READ MORE More than 51,000 automobile crashes on Michigan roadways involved deer in 2020, reversing an upward year-over-year trend of total deer crashes that dates back to 2016, according to data from the Michigan State Police. That represents nearly five percent of the 245,432 automobile accidents in Michigan in 2020, which also saw a five-year low. There were five fatalities in 2020 deer-related crashes, a more than 50% decline from both the previous year and the average of the past five years. However, 2020 did record the most non-fatal injuries from deer crashes in five years at 1,265. More data here: READ MORE A significant number of people who recover from COVID-19, especially those who are hospitalized, experience cognitive difficulties for months, a new study found. The research, published in the medical journal JAMA, analyzed a group of 740 adults entered into the Mount Sinai Health System registry who tested positive for COVID-19 between April 2020 and May 2021 and did not have a history of dementia. The findings bolster growing evidence that COVID-19 infection could have lasting implications for survivors after recovering from the disease. By Nov. 5, commissioners are expected to kick out a final draft of state House, state Senate and Congressional maps, after which there will be a 45-day public comment period. The commission’s official district maps for the next decade are expected to come up for a vote Dec. 30.
