'You had to fight to stay alive,' WWII sailor recalls torpedoes, shark attacks
In the summer of 1945, Richard Thelen was a gunner aboard the USS Indianapolis. He was sleeping topside when Japanese torpedoes struck and sank the heavy cruiser in the shark-infested waters of the Pacific Ocean near the Philippines. Thelen was 18 years old.
