In today's newsletter, 362% increase in traffic tickets sends message to drivers, families living together on the rise, and Lions open training camp. |
"Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" released in theaters on Friday in what some are calling the perfect double feature. Did you know only a handful of theaters in the country are showing “Oppenheimer” in IMAX as director Christopher Nolan intended? There's two in Michigan. I'm still waiting to see "Barbie". But a few dolls were on my social media including a Gov. Gretchen Whitmer Barbie. Michigan State Police deleted their "Barbie" post "out of respect" for female officers. |

See how each Michigan community’s diversity has changed since 2020 |
Only one of Michigan’s 83 counties reported a decline in its multiracial population. Michigan’s fastest-growing demographic continues to be people who identify as two or more races. Here's a map of Michigan’s demographic population estimates by county. Something to see: This lighthouse in Michigan’s Thumb is unmissable. So, why do boats ignore it? In transportation: These are some of the closures to watch out for this week as road projects continue. |

362% increase in traffic tickets sends message to drivers in West Michigan city |
Speeders beware: If you want to avoid a ticket, you’d best slow down or stay out of Roosevelt Park. The tiny burb near Muskegon has drastically increased its traffic patrols. More in crime: Hundreds of juveniles serving life sentences still await resentencing. The backlog of cases is not an easy fix and could take years. A reminder: Search teams used 911 texting to find 3 missing Boy Scouts in the Upper Peninsula. Authorities are reminding the public that 911 texting is available even if cell service isn’t. |

A solution for some: Families living together are on the rise, a trend that hits economic flashpoints: an aging population, tight housing market and growing childcare expenses. Lions grappling with sky-high expectations as they open training camp |
Yes, the Detroit Lions are NFC North favorites. And no one is quite used to the sound of that -- not even them. The Lions have lost for a long time, then lost like almost never before during a horrific stretch from 2017-2021. But then they heated up by winning eight of their final 10 games last season. Headlines from training camp: Jared Goff feels how far along the offense already is to open Year 3 in Detroit and Aidan Hutchinson feels the NFL game has slowed down for him heading into second season. Superman soft serve is a huge hit at Michigan ice cream shop and it’s vegan |
No more scooping: You’d be hard-pressed to find this type of ice cream outside of Michigan and it’s even more difficult to find it in soft serve. Dairy Whip in Redford has Superman soft serve and it's a hit with customers. Looking for a good time? When many people think of Michigan wine, they think of the Leelanau Peninsula. But they don't have to! Check out the 16 wineries that make up the Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail. Try somewhere new: See our Michigan's Best Local Eats for this week in Jackson, Ann Arbor, Freehand, Grand Haven, Portage and Grand Rapids. |
