How Michigan governor candidates want to run the state
There are a myriad of ways to run a political campaign. Michigan Governor Rick Snyder ran as a political outsider eight years ago with a promise to run the state like a business. President Donald Trump rode an anti-establishment wave into the Oval Office two years ago. Clearly, running as counter to what is in place can be effective. So how are the 2018 candidates for governor framing how they'd lead Michigan the next four to eight years? Not surprisingly, none of the seven have said they plan to run our state like a business. (FYI, the August 7th primary is less than three weeks away!) MORE

Stopping Nassar-related reform legislation is part of MSU settlement

The $500 million settlement Michigan State University reached with victims of Larry Nassar in May included a provision to stop the Michigan Legislature from passing reforms on sexual assault. Legislators are not bound by the agreement. However, two bills in the Senate have stalled in committee, and nobody seems to know why or if they will be addressed in the near future. MORE

2.75 trillion gallons of water has entered Lake Superior in past 30 days

Weather is such a fickle beast. While parts of Michigan are seeing drought-like conditions, heavy rainfall over Lake Superior this past month has sent 2.75 trillion gallons of water into the greatest of our Great Lakes. Water levels rose 2 inches higher than normal during that time. We suppose we should have seen this coming since we are in the midst of a multi-year rise in water levels. MLive chief meteorologist Mark Torregrossa sure did. (It's hard to get anything weather related past that guy!)

Grading the Tigers from Martin (A) to Martinez (F)

The Detroit Tigers weren't expected to contend this season. However, that doesn't mean players get a pass during this retooling year. MLive Tigers beat reporter Evan Woodbery took advantage of the All-Star break to assess the current crop of Tigers as they enter the second half of the 2018 season. Woodbery took expectations into account when assigning grades. For instance, Niko Goodrum is hitting a modest .250, but got an A- since he went from a cheap minor-league pickup to the starting second baseman. (We suppose that says as much about Goodrum's decent first half as it says about the Tigers' ugly one.) MORE
