Music to the ears of thrill seekers |
Do you remember the speedy Belle Isle Slide that made international headlines in 2022 when video went viral showing people going down the metal slide dangerously fast, getting air and slamming down on the unforgiving track? Well according to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, it's going to reopen this summer with some changes. The slide, which has been around since 1967, closed for two years during COVID before reopening in 2022, only to close again for about a week to address the potential dangers of the ride. It did not open last year, but will soon be ready for riders again in 2024. Gmac Cash might just have to hop back on the track again. |

If Michigan ditches its gas tax, what might a replacement look like? |
Insight: It’s not yet clear what a replacement to the state gas tax would look like in Michigan, despite a $5M allocation to get the ball rolling. As proposed, a mileage-based user fee pilot program would invite volunteers to pay a fee per mile driven over a given period instead of paying a vehicle registration fee and 30-cents-per-gallon fuel tax. While the proposal is still in its infancy, residents can get a sense of what it might look like by seeing what’s worked in other states like California, Oregon and Utah. An update: The modern marvel that is the Gordie Howe International Bridge has reached a significant milestone. It is now just 85 feet (25 meters), or the width of an official NHL rink, away from being connected. To know: Michigan is expected to have more than 1.15 million residents hitting the road this Memorial Day weekend. This year’s estimate would set Michigan on track for its second-most travelers for a Memorial Day weekend since AAA began tracking in 2000. The highest was in 2005. |

In weather-related news: We are starting to get a feel for the wind flow that may be present most times through the summer. We can apply that expected wind flow to the wildfire season and come up with what may happen here in the Great Lakes region. The wildfire season has already started in Canada and even the western U.S. to some degree. "Timeless allure": Ships have been cruising the freshwater seas for more than 150 years, and the industry is picking up steam, officials said during a news conference on Mackinac Island on Tuesday.
