Happy winter solstice! ❄️🌚✨ |
Yes, today is the winter solstice. What does that mean? Well, it's the shortest day of the year. So after we hit the solstice, our days will get longer. (YAAAAAY!) You can find out more about the solstice here. Since it gets dark out so early tonight, perhaps it is the perfect time to put some light into your life. If you didn't already see the headline, Michigan is home to one of the best holiday historic home tours in the country. Meadow Brook Hall has an indoor tour and an outdoor tour, both filled with beautiful holiday lights. If you really want to mark the solstice, set your alarm for 4:48 p.m., which is the official moment we are at our farthest tilt away from the sun. Warm winter solstice wishes to you and yours. |

Is a blizzard warning coming? Or maybe power outages and frozen pipes? Here' s the latest. |
Blizzard warning for Christmas week? There has been talk of the coming storm becoming a blizzard. MLive Chief Meteorologist Mark Torregrossa talked with the head of the weather warning department at the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids. Here's what he found out. Frozen pipes? Power outages? We love the idea of gently falling snow in the lead up to Christmas. A picture-perfect dusting of flakes, but not enough to mess with our holiday travel plans. Folks, what we’ve got coming is not that. Not even close. Is your winter emergency kit ready? No one plans to slide off the road, get stuck in a snowbank, or find themselves waiting for a tow truck with the temperatures hovering just above zero. But if that happens to you, you'll be happy you have these 15 items on hand. |

Michigan COVID cases continue to increase, with deaths slightly declining in the last week. |
An increase in cases: There have been 11,074 new, confirmed and identified cases of COVID-19 and 100 confirmed deaths in the last seven days in Michigan, according to the state Department of Health and Human Services. See more on the numbers.
Have old COVID tests? Don't throw away your unused at-home COVID-19 tests that appear to be expired. The actual expiration date has changed for some tests. You can find out how to check your tests here.
Need more tests? Michiganders are again eligible to receive free at-home COVID tests in the mail. You can get a pack of four tests at no cost to you. Just follow the instructions in this story. |

The wacky slide that caused a stir on Michigan's Belle Isle is still being discussed months later. |
Jimmy Kimmel's clip of the year:When the Belle Isle Giant Slide reopened in August after two years, video went viral on social media showing people going down it dangerously fast, getting air and slamming down on the steel track. And Jimmy Kimmel is still talking about it.
Watch our video:Of course, our very own Ed Pevos had to check out the infamous Belle Isle slide earlier this year. He got plenty of video that we shared at the time. Some riders had a smoother time than others, as you'll see. Watch here. More fun content from Ed: One of Michigan’s biggest comic cons has just announced a huge “Clerks” reunion, complete with both Jay and Silent Bob. Kevin Smith, Jason Mewes and more will be at Astronomicon 2023. |
