South Haven residents push for lifeguards after rash of Lake Michigan drownings 
 
Drownings in The Great Lakes this summer already have claimed the lives of more than 50 people. As of late July, the number of drowning deaths in Lake Michigan alone was a staggering 27. Now, residents of one lake community are trying to take action. A petition asking the city of South Haven to bring back lifeguards to the city's beaches has garnered 16,000 signatures. The city hasn't staffed lifeguards since 2001. MORE

When was the last time you took someone to a Great Lake who had never been to one before? More than likely, their eyes go wide and they think they must be looking at an ocean. There is a reason these beauties are called great. But as majestic as they are, they also can prove deadly. (See the main story on drownings this summer above.)
