Even if you aren't a baseball fan, you should be an honorary Tiger today, as Detroit's team takes to the diamond inside Comerica Park for a delayed but joyous return to America's pastime. Student loan payments, interest and collections have been on hold for two years. First put in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the pause has been extended seven times by two presidential administrations. It was pushed back again this week by the Biden administration from a May 1 deadline to Aug. 31, the Associated Press reports. From ransomware to romance scams, cybercrimes cost Michiganders $181 million last year. The 2021 FBI Internet Crimes Report ranks Michigan as one of the top 10 states for losses with nearly 11,000 victims. Top crimes include phishing, non-payment, personal data breach, identity theft and extortion. The highest losses nationally were reported by older victims with those over 60 years old accounting for nearly a quarter of losses. The FBI report also shows that total losses from internet crimes have increased nearly 400% in the past five years, going from $1.4 billion in 2017 to $6.9 billion in 2021. READ MORE
Detroit City Council on Tuesday passed a new recreational marijuana licensing ordinance to replace another that stalled due to legal challenges. The city plans to issue 100 recreational retailer licenses, 30 consumption lounge licenses and 30 microbusiness licenses with half going to social equity or “Detroit legacy” applicants. It’s allowing an unlimited number of licenses for recreational marijuana growers, processors, transporters, safety labs, events and event organizers. Concerns remain over whether the new ordinance goes far enough to resolve issues. READ MORE
