Redistricters offer 10 maps for redrawing metro Detroit Michigan House districts |
Tasked with bringing seven Michigan House districts into compliance with the Voting Rights Act, the Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission whittled its selection down to 10 options last week. The maps are the result a federal court mandate to redraw a broad swath of Metro Detroit legislative districts, which a three-judge panel determined improperly diluted the influence of Black voters in Detroit. Looking to sell: Consumers Energy said it will issue a request for proposals this month to find qualified buyers for its 13 hydroelectric dams the company wishes to sell. |

Michigan’s warm-up is so rare it’s only happened a couple times in the last 125 years |
Feeling toasty: We usually do have a day or two in most early Februarys that warm up into the 30s or 40s. This warm-up is much more remarkable, however. The long-term normal temperature is 23.5 degrees. Our next five days will average over 40 degrees at most Lower Michigan cities, putting this warm stretch at least 17 degrees warmer than normal. Lunar New Year: Here's what to know as Year of the Dragon begins with a new moon this weekend. Stay off: As icebergs grow and contract along the southern Lake Michigan shoreline, photographers and visitors have flocked to catch a glimpse of frozen nature slowly shifting and sloshing in the waves. The ice formations are beautiful. But they can be deadly. |

Michigan State has breathing room but Tom Izzo still wants his team to play hungry |
Tom Izzo had a frank conversation with his players when they were sitting at 9-7 in mid-January. Looking back nearly a month later, Izzo was glad he’d had the talk. His team has won five of six games since that moment and moved firmly back on the right side of the NCAA Tournament bubble. For the Wolverines: Will Tschetter has never had a losing basketball season in his life, and he’s surely not alone on the Michigan men’s basketball team. For the Wolverines, 7-15 and in last place in the Big Ten, this season has been a new (and unpleasant) experience. Giving out grades: The Detroit Lions have wrapped up a spectacular 2023 season. Over the next two weeks, MLive will hand out reviews for each of the team’s position groups. Today: Quarterback. |
