In today's newsletter, we have info on 10 of the most lovable locations in Michigan, tips for avoiding political arguments during the holidays and a new episode of our Detroit Lions podcast. |
Holiday wishes to all! (But a special hat tip to the plow drivers.) |
As I scroll my Facebook feed, a ton of businesses and organizations are shutting down for this storm. Bell's Brewery closed a couple days early for the holiday. Schools that were supposed to be open have closed for today. Even Bronner's Christmas Wonderland is closed due to the weather.
But as everyone else really makes it a "home for the holidays" situation by staying inside the house, the plow drivers are doing the opposite. They are out there working hard so we can eventually get back on the roads. MDOT is at full-force with drivers and local municipalities planned ahead to get workers onto the roadways. We seriously hope those drivers find some special presents from Santa under the tree.
Of course, they aren't the only ones. Big shout outs to first responders, utility workers, health care workers and anyone else who sacrifices weekends and holidays to brave the snow and help the rest of us out. We appreciate you. |

They say to avoid politics talk: But perhaps it's unavoidable in your family? You just know Uncle Ned will have a glass of the special egg nog and bring up something political. So how do you keep things civil when the subject comes up? We have advice for you. We have plenty of common ground: A recent study found 83% of Republicans believe “it’s important that every American student learn about slavery, Jim Crow and segregation.” And 83% of Democrats believe that “students should not be made to feel guilty or personally responsible for the errors of prior generations.” Speaking of politics: The Michigan proposal recount has ended with few changed votes and many failed challenges. |

Annoyed with the weather? Let's talk about something uplifting — the Detroit Lions. |
America's team! OK, maybe that's the first time someone has called the Lions "America's team." And perhaps even the first time they've been called "uplifting." BUT I AM TOTALLY IN ON THIS TEAM. That's why my favorite podcast is officially Dungeon of Doom, MLive's Detroit Lions podcast. Serious dedication: One of our podcast hosts, Kyle Meinke, had to board a plane at the last minute to make sure he could cover the Lions game in North Carolina before getting trapped in Michigan by the storm. A huge renewable energy purchase by Ford is OK'd by Michigan utility regulators. |
An historic deal:Ford’s plans to make U.S. history’s largest purchase of renewable energy from a utility company got the green light from Michigan utility regulators. The deal puts Ford a decade ahead of its goal to be carbon-neutral by 2050.
How it will be used:Ford will use the power to run its Michigan manufacturing plants. By 2025, every Ford vehicle manufactured in the state will be assembled with the equivalent of 100% carbon-free electricity.
While we are discussing power:A possible restart of a shuttered nuclear power plant near South Haven could bolster Michigan’s carbon-free energy supply and help meet emissions reduction goals while awaiting more wind and solar energy generation to come onto the grid. |
