Summer's heat is ramping back up in some parts of the state as the heat index could climb to 107. Several southern Michigan counties are under a Heat Advisory that will continue into Friday. As a recent Florida-to-Michigan resident, I'm speaking from experience when I say heat-related illnesses aren't fun. If you have to spend time outdoors, seek shade, hydrate frequently and stay up to date with the latest weather advisories. All Kalamazoo Public Library locations and the Portage Zhang Senior Center will operate as cooling centers during the heat wave. |

New developments: More than 200 people are part of the extended family that collectively owns a cottage at Gourdneck Lake south of Kalamazoo, but perhaps not for much longer. Family divided: Kalamazoo County is working to force the owners to sell it the property via eminent domain. Some family members want to keep the house, while others say it should be sold to the county. Running dry: Millions of gallons of water have been pumped from a mining pit in Ann Arbor Township as part of a dewatering process the mineâs new owners have implemented. Meanwhile, residents nearby are seeing issues with their wells. |

This Michigan school is using indoor farming to teach students to grow their own food |
School grown food: Concord Community School students will soon be among the first in Jackson County to use new equipment to grow their own produce. They're using âFlex Farmsââ indoor vertical hydroponic farm units provided by the Fork Farms companyâto grow fresh food year round for teachers and other students. Welcome to campus: Grand Valley State University is welcoming its largest, most diverse class ever. According to GVSU, about 7,000 new undergraduate and graduate students comprise this yearâs incoming class, an 18 percent increase from last yearâs incoming class. Judge's decision: Michiganâs Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act is not violating the rights of a Catholic church and school in the state, a federal judge ruled Tuesday. |

4 things to remember as Michigan heat indexes soar past 100 this week |
Feeling the heat: Heat indexesâor the âfeels likeââtemperatures are expected to soar past 100 degrees this week, with several southern Michigan counties under heat advisories through Friday, officials said. The National Weather Service has some tips to help Michiganders stay safe. Looking up: The month of August will close out with a rare treat for sky watchers: A âsuper blue moonâ that will be the last of its kind for more than a decade. Repairs needed: A storm that rained hail the size of tennis balls in Davison last month left more than $4 million worth of damages to the school district. |

Heat Index over 100 degrees could make Michigan high school football games dangerous for players |
Play safe: High school football games being played across southern Michigan on Thursday and Friday could be played during a time of dangerous heat. Hereâs a look at which games have been moved due to high temperatures. With cuts looming in the next week, general manager Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell got together on Monday and had their first in-depth discussion about what the Detroit Lionsâ 53-man roster might look like in Week 1. Tigers: Kerry Carpenter hit a game-tying grand slam, but the Chicago Cubs quickly retook the lead, beating the Detroit Tigers 6-4 in the series finale on Wednesday afternoon at Comerica Park. |
