In today's newsletter, investigator describes school shooter’s mom as cold, Tom Izzo earns win No. 700 and Grand Hotel unveils 2024 special vacation packages. |
At the end of this month, I'll have a fond memory to look upon. On Feb. 29, 2020, I was with two of my dear friends. We all attended the same community college and went our separate ways when it was time to go to university, so finding time to meet up was rare and special. We documented this moment by taking a photo together. Soon after, we realized we wouldn't see it for awhile. As most of you may know, Snapchat shows your memories from one year ago everyday. But since we took the photo on a leap year, it wouldn't pop up until 2024, this year.
So if you're looking to have a little fun on leap day, open up Snapchat and take a photo. It'll be your own mini time capsule. |

Large wolf pack spotted at icy kill site: Isle Royale Winter Study updates |
Observing: Special wildlife moments were captured recently by a research team conducting the annual Winter Study on Michigan’s Isle Royale. Each winter, teams of researchers fan out using skis, snowshoes and take to the air in a survey plane to observe and gather detailed information on the island’s growing wolf packs and its moose. Cancelled: Unprecedented warmth that is melting snowpack and the ice on harbors and bays in the Upper Peninsula has forced Michigan Technological University researchers to suspend the annual Wolf and Moose Winter Study on Isle Royale for the first time in 65 years. Speaking of weather: A glance at the calendar and you know we are in the deepest part of winter right now. However, one weather feature says we are now marching toward spring. |

Tuesday elections puts Michigan House tie one step closer to resolution |
The Michigan state House is one step closer to closing a 54-54 seat partisan split after voters cast their ballots in special primary elections Tuesday night over who will fill two vacant seats in the lower chamber. Details: Macomb County Commissioner Mai Xiong and Westland City Council member Peter Herzberg, both Democrats, will now go on to face off against their Republican opponents come April 16. That election will go on to determine who has control of the Michigan House of Representatives, possibly returning Democrats to their trifecta power state. More in politics: Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson has raised on more than $1.2 million to an independent political action committee since the 2022 election, leaving the state’s senior-most election administrator with more than $1 million to support candidates and causes heading into the 2024 election season. |

Investigator describes school shooter’s mom as cold after her son killed 4 students |
Under oath: Hours after a teenager killed four students at Oxford High School, his mother said, “He’s going to have to suffer,” an investigator testified Wednesday. Detective Lt. Sam Marzban of the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office testified on the fifth day of trial in the involuntary manslaughter case against Jennifer Crumbley. It was part of the prosecution’s effort to portray her as a cold and thoughtless parent. Before: A school official found it "strange" that the shooter’s mom didn’t take the teen home over his violent drawing. More in crime: Suspected fentanyl, cocaine and crack cocaine were seized during a drug bust in Southwest Michigan. |

Michigan State’s Tom Izzo earns win No. 700 in rivalry showdown on his birthday |
What a victory: There was a lot more to celebrate at the Breslin Center on Tuesday night than just a 19-point win over Michigan. Tom Izzo reached 700 wins in his career, an occasion that allowed him a moment to stop and reflect – and look toward the future. Next level: The NBA Draft just got bigger. The league formerly announced that it will expand the draft from one night to two beginning in 2024. All or nothing: The Lions came painfully close to the Super Bowl. And they're not flinching from the expectations next season: Super Bowl or bust. |
