Emergency powers law used for pandemic stay-home order is coming off the books The law used by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to issue emergency orders without legislative approval during the pandemic is getting repealed. On Wednesday, the Michigan House approved Unlock Michigan’s initiative to repeal the Emergency Powers of the Governor Act of 1945, which Whitmer drew authority from to extend a state of emergency during the COVID-19 pandemic until the Michigan Supreme Court determined it was unconstitutional in October 2020. The Unlock Michigan initiative does not impact another, more recent state of emergency law on the books that allows the governor to declare a state of emergency for 28 days, after which point the governor must seek legislative approval for a state of emergency to continue. READ MORE James Craig forms exploratory committee ahead of expected gubernatorial run Former Detroit Police Chief James Craig took another step toward officially entering the race for governor on Wednesday, forming an exploratory committee and announcing an upcoming listening tour. Craig also released a video that features him driving around Detroit, showcasing things like the house he grew up in and improvements in policing. Not yet officially a candidate for governor, Craig has taken many steps in that direction, including retiring as Detroit Police Chief, making national television appearances and giving speeches. Recently, he spoke to Republican groups in Jackson and Grand Rapids. Richard Trask II is charged with one felony count of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder in Kalamazoo County District Court. The charge stems from a domestic violence incident that occurred after the couple attended a swingers' party, according to a probable cause affidavit filed by the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office. He is the lead agent in the case against the people accused of plotting to kidnap Gov. Whitmer.
