Literacy is not a fundamental right, federal judge in Detroit Schools case says
A federal judge has ruled against guardians who filed a lawsuit claiming the state denied Detroit Public School students the right to learn to read. According to Judge Stephen Murphy, literacy is not a fundamental right. The lawsuit, which named Gov. Rick Snyder and other state officials as defendants, claimed the conditions within the Detroit Schools were so poor that students were not receiving a minimally adequate education. While Judge Murphy stated the conditions and outcomes of the schools were 'devastating,' he could not rule that the state is required to provide a minimal level of education that includes a right to literacy. MORE
