Last homeowner in path of Detroit-Windsor bridge holding out for more money
There isn't much left of the neighborhood Nathaniel Brent and his family have called home since 1989. Most of the homes in Detroit's Delray neighborhood have long since vanished, partly due to years of urban decay, but more so now ahead of construction of the new Detroit-Windsor bridge. Only two residential properties remain in the path of the bridge. Brent has no illusions about his situation. He knows he can't stand in the way of the $2.1 billion Gordie Howe International Bridge project. However, he does not feel the state has offered him a fair market rate for his property. And he's willing to hold out as long as it takes. MORE

House, Senate vote to end Michigan's prevailing wage law

It was a rather busy Wednesday for our lawmakers in Lansing. Both Republican-led chambers voted to repeal Michigan's prevailing wage law. The law had guaranteed union-level wages on public construction sites for half a century. The Senate voted 23-14, while the House went 56-53. The House also voted along party lines - 62-47 - in favor of requiring recipients of the Healthy Michigan Medicaid plan to work 80 hours per month, with Democrats opposing the measure. MORE

Another historic Detroit building getting new life

The rehabilitation of historic buildings in Detroit is nothing short of remarkable. Anyone who visited the city the past few decades couldn't help but wonder what these grand structures looked like in their prime. (Or fondly remember a time when they were.) In fact, stately architecture is one of the reasons Detroit held onto the moniker "Paris of the Midwest" beyond the fur-trading colonial days. One of the latest rehabilitation announcements involves the historic Albert Kahn Building in the heart of the New Center neighborhood, about three miles north of downtown. The building is known for its ornate lobby and the underground tunnels that connect it with the Fisher Building and Cadillac Place. MORE

Detroit's decade-long title drought doesn't look to end directly

The last time Detroit - and by extension the rest of Michigan - celebrated a major sports championship, the Red Wings were hoisting the Stanley Cup, and Matthew Stafford was entering his junior season at the University of Georgia. Where does the time go? Well, we took a trip down memory lane and looked at where the world was in 2008. We also put together a searchable database, which allows you to see where Detroit ranks for titles among cities/metro areas with franchises in each of the four major sports. Turns out, despite the decade-long drought, we stack up pretty good against the rest of the country. MORE

Putting Mackinac Island fudge to the test

Mackinac Island is known for its fudge. (At this point, who doesn't know that? We mean, really???) However, with so many excellent options to choose from, how do you decide which one to take with you on the ferry ride back to the mainland? We conducted a very scientific blind taste test of six of the local fudge makers on the island. (And by "scientific" we mean tasty.) Two tasters on our three-person panel agreed on a No. 1. But, since every fudge palate is different, you'll probably need to try 'em all for yourself. You know, just to make sure you get the right one. (You are welcome for the excuse!) MORE
