What Mackinac Island looked like a century ago
You know what Mackinac Island looks like these days — lots of tourists, bicycles, horses and fudge. Have you ever considered what Michigan's favorite summer destination looked like 100 years ago? Enter travel writer Emily Bingham's time machine and take a trip into Michigan's past. You'll spot cows grazing near Fort Michilimackinac, the Grand Hotel in its infancy and, of course, exactly zero cars. Would you rather have today's Mackinac Island or would you trade it in for the one of yesteryear? We'll take what we have now. It would be hard to live without a Pink Pony rum runner. MORE

Ex-MSU prof. accused of helping 3M allegedly suppress PFAS studies

The actions of a former Michigan State University professor who performed consulting services for 3M Company - the inventors of PFAS and makers of Scotchgard - were called into question during a now-settled legal fight between the state of Minnesota and 3M. Attorneys representing Minnesota claimed John Giesy was part of 3M's effort to "distort" and "suppress" research into the toxicity of PFAS. Giesy, who left MSU in 2006 after more than two decades in East Lansing, was never named a party in the lawsuit. And, for his part, he denies the allegations and characterized them as nothing more than "hearsay." MORE

Happy 100th birthday to officer No. 100

Henry Wachowski was 28 years old in 1946 when he joined the Saginaw Police Department. He was given badge No. 100, and wore it every day to work for more than 30 years. His badge number was just a number at the time. However, he grew attached to his badge during his years of service, eventually thinking of it as a good luck charm of sorts. On Tuesday, Wachowski got to dust off his lucky No. 100 as he and his family and friends celebrated his 100th birthday. We sat down with Mr. Wachowski as he reminisced on three decades of police work and 10 decades of life. "There's no formula for a long life," he said to us. "I guess you're just born with it." We'll take his word on that. MORE

MSU 'just felt right' for 5-star football recruit

Devontae Dobbs had his pick of college destinations. The massive 6-foot-5 offensive lineman out of Bellview is a five-star prospect ranked the No. 13 recruit in the country for the class of 2019. We have him as the top-ranked recruit in the state. His decision came down to what university felt like home, was the best fit and where he connected with the coaching staff. Michigan State University checked all those boxes and then some in landing its highest-ranked recruit since Charles Rogers. Dobbs joins a short, but elite, list of five-star recruits to end up in East Lansing. MORE

World's first combined Applebee's/IHOP location opens in Michigan

Pancakes and steak? Why not? Since the world's first combination Applebee's and IHOP restaurant opened in Downtown Detroit this week, the sky is the limit (or maybe your appetite is the only limit). The huge 12,000-foot space can host as many as 300 hungry Michiganders. So bring a few (hundred) friends and give it a go. Of course, you should also check out the local restaurants while you're in Detroit because the locals make the best food. But that just means you have to eat a second dinner. MORE
