In today's newsletter, Michiganders react to the fall of Roe v. Wade, stories about the great outdoors and updates on the case surrounding the killing of Patrick Lyoya.

Before we talk about anything else, we should talk about safety.

Initially, I was going to put this story about the Lake Michigan wave forecast down in the numbered spots of today's newsletter. Then I realized you should see this information first — in some places along Lake Michigan, 6-foot waves are anticipated today.

With a history of drownings in the deadliest of the Great Lakes, along with recent beach closures for near-drownings, this is life or death information. But there is an easy solution: just don't go in the water during dangerous conditions. If you still want to go to the beach, stay on the shore and look out at the wave show happening in the water.

Speaking of safety, here's another story to see today — Nissan is recalling 323,000 vehicles because their hoods can fly open.

Mackinac Island plays the labor lottery as summer workers are hard to find.

A vital need: Mackinac Island has a population of roughly 500 people. But in the summer, when the tourist destination is slammed with visitors, 4,000-5,000 workers are needed around the island. About 20-25% of those workers come from others countries, utilizing work visas.

A growing need without extra help: Congress capped the number of H2-B workers to 33,000 each summer for the entire country back in 1990. While needs have increased and available local workers have decreased, places like restaurants and hotels on Mackinac Island are competing with the entire country.

Man who recorded Patrick Lyoya killing pulled out phone because he knew something was wrong

Information released Wednesday: A witness account of events surrounding Patrick's Lyoya's death in a police shooting was released this week. The witness said he pulled out his cellphone to record the interaction because he "knew something was wrong."

Lyoya's dad questioned officer's actions: In additional information released Wednesday, Patrick Lyoya's father questioned the actions of the officer, Christopher Schurr, during a police interview days after the killing.

Investigation ongoing: Despite already being fired, former Grand Rapids police officer Christopher Schurr’s fatal use of force against Patrick Lyoya is still the focus of an ongoing Internal Affairs investigation.
