The tallest cat in all the land lives right here in Michigan. |
I couldn't let your day start without making sure you had heard about Fenrir. He is the tallest cat in the world, and he lives right here in Michigan.
The 2023 Guinness Book of World Records has been released in print and online. In it, you will find Dr. Will Powers' cat, who lives in Farmington Hills. If you are curious what the world's tallest domesticated cat looks like, we have a picture of Fenrir below in the newsletter.
So exactly how tall is this statuesque animal? Fenrir measured in at 47.83 centimeters ( or 18.83 inches). That's a nice boost for me today, since I usually feel very short, but now I know I would have record-breaking height ... if I were a feline.

Marijuana is legal in Michigan, but mothers may face a CPS investigation if they use it. |
Reporting is up: There is "certainly more disclosure of THC use in pregnancy," said Dr. Courtney Townsel, an OB-GYN with Michigan Medicine. The number of pregnant women in the U.S. who admitted to using marijuana in the prior month increased 28% between 2019 and 2020. And it's mandatory: Medicinal marijuana use has been legal in Michigan since 2008, with recreational use legalized in 2018. Still, state law requires doctors or medical staff to report mothers who test positive for specific substances, including marijuana, alcohol and a host of illegal drugs. How many reports?Throughout the last year, between Aug. 22, 2021 and Aug. 21, 2022, Michigan doctors and medical staff filed 5,530 complaints against mothers for possible negligence or abuse, due to substance use detected or suspected in their babies at birth. |

The new bivalent booster: The vaccine includes mRNA components of the original COVID-19 strain (like the initial vaccines) plus components of the omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants to help fight the latest strains of the virus.
Who has gotten the booster? People are hardly racing to get the omicron-specific shot. So far, 3% of Michiganders have received the latest omicron-specific booster – about 300,000 people. People 12 and older are eligible. We have a look at exactly who has gotten it in Michigan.

Jury selection has begun for another trial in the Gov. Whitmer kidnapping plot. |
This time, in Jackson County: Three men from the county are standing trial for alleged ties to a plot to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. Jury selection began Monday but will continue as a full jury was not seated during day one.
What's happened so far:Defense counsel asked members of the jury pool what their opinions were on gun ownership and usage, particularly AR-15 weapons, likely in preparation for evidence to be shown of defendants using such weapons during training exercises.
Other courts news: A woman who took part in the 2020 Grand Rapids riots has been sentenced to a year in jail and must pay $9,585 restitution.
