Memorial to Kalamazoo bicycle crash victims unveiled on two-year anniversary
Two years after five cyclists were killed and four were injured during a bike ride just north of Kalamazoo, a memorial to the victims was unveiled across the street from the site of the tragedy. The sculpture features five bicycles on top, which represent the five riders who died. A brief description of the crash and the names of those involved are displayed on four panels. The driver of the truck that struck all nine riders that day was convicted in May of numerous counts, including second-degree murder. He is set to be sentenced Monday, June 11. MORE

Permits approved for potash mine amid environmental concerns

The clash between business interests and environmental concerns has been front and center in the state of late. This week, the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality approved a Canadian mining company's proposal for an open-pit gold mine in the Upper Peninsula. That decision comes on the heels of the DEQ granting permits for a potash mining operation in Osceola County. Opponents to both projects have raised concerns about nearby wetlands and the impact to surface and ground water. MORE

Inside one of the last vacant homes in Detroit's historic Brush Park

Another day, another story about the redevelopment of a historic Detroit property. (What can we say? We love these posts about rehabilitating the grand structures of yore). This one comes out of Detroit's Brush Park, which once was replete with stately mansions. The Henry Glover House was left to rot. It was a haven for squatters. It was on the demolition list. But it was saved. Now one of the few remaining houses in this once magnificent neighborhood is getting a new lease on life. When finished, the project will include five market rate units, each with about 1,400-square-feet of space. MORE

Red Wings, Pistons a long way off from championship form

The Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Pistons aren't too far removed from being contenders in their respective leagues. However, neither franchise is close to returning to championship form. Realistically, the best fans can hope for is a taste of the postseason from these Little Caesars Arena tenants. We take a look at the issues facing both teams. For instance, the Red Wings have some talent on their roster, but lack top-line superstars. The Pistons, meanwhile, have a pair of All-Stars, but have little roster flexibility. MORE

The weird questions tourists ask on vacation in Leelanau County

The weather is getting warmer, and with it the tourists start heading north for the summer. We appreciate tourists. They infuse the Michigan economy with millions of dollars every year. Plus, they leave us with lasting memories when they depart. Particularly memorable are some of the questions they bring with them while visiting our wonders. Folks in Leelanau County put together a list of actual questions they've been asked from tourists. There are some real gems. Here are three of our favorites:
• Sleeping Bear Dunes: "Where is the actual sleeping bear?"
Lake Michigan: "What ocean is this?"
Wildlife: "Can you see any whales or dolphins from here?"
We love it. Stay gold, tourists, stay gold. MORE
