Another week is almost in the books. Here are some fun things to do this weekend in Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids. A few more events happening over the next couple of days: A celebration of Earth Day in Grand Haven and high school esports state championships in Kalamazoo. If you're in the U.P., GarLyn Zoo Wildlife Park opens for the season today. Be prepared because the weather forecast doesn't look so great for outdoor events. You could see some wet weather, and possibly even some snowflakes again. Wonder why it won't warm up? Current water temperatures for the Great Lakes are really cold. |

Michigan 7th grader takes control of moving bus after driver lost consciousness |
A small hero: A quick-thinking 7th grader may have saved his classmates and a bus driver from possible injury or even worse. The student actually took control of a moving bus after the driver lost consciousness behind the wheel. It happened on Wednesday, April 26 while the driver was taking students home from Carter Middle School. According to a letter sent to staff and parents from Superintendent Robert Livernois, the driver became lightheaded before losing consciousness. That’s when Dillon Reeves, as identified on Facebook by Warren City Councilman Jonathan Lafferty, took action. Gunman bought ammo hours before MSU mass shooting, motive a mystery |
East Lansing: In an ongoing investigation, police on Thursday, April 27, provided more details on the firearms and ammunition found with the shooter after he killed himself - and said that the motive remains unknown. Police have released a timeline of Anthony McRae's actions on the night he shot and killed three Michigan State University students and injured five others. Police also determined the path he took before he killed himself. Switching gears: Late last year, a bizarre story broke of an Isabella County mother who spent more than a year catfishing two teens, including her own daughter. The strange saga has reached its conclusion, with the mother going from catfish to new “fish” in prison for her internet deception. |

Ann Arbor replaces No Mow May with Pollinator-Aware Yard Care |
Something different: Ann Arbor resident Rita Mitchell says the last time she had any lawn to mow was probably around 1997. Instead of turf grass, the yard areas surrounding her Fifth Street home are filled with mostly native plants. Encouraging citizens: Mitchell is one of the city’s environmental commissioners who have worked with city staff to launch a new Pollinator-Aware Yard Care campaign to replace No Mow May with a broader message. As for the dirt: The pH of your soil is the foundation for the nutrients your plants absorb. MLive meteorologist Mark Torregrossa has some tips for how to get the most out of your soil. |

How Day 1 of the 2023 NFL draft went for the Lions |
Quite a stir: The Detroit Lions made a bold move during the 2023 NFL draft by trading away their sixth and 81st overall picks to the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for the 12th and 34th overall picks. A stunner: However, the real shock came when the Lions selected Alabama’s Jahmyr Gibbs with the 12th overall pick, adding yet another talented running back to their roster. After that: The Lions surprisingly waited to address their defense until their second first-round pick, selecting ultra-productive Iowa linebacker Jack Campbell at No. 18. |
