Number of Michigan births hits a 76-year low
There were 111,507 births recorded in Michigan in 2017. That number is the lowest for the state since 1941. Per capita, there were fewer babies born per 1,000 women since those numbers were first documented in 1900. What are the reasons for the decline in births? For starters, Michigan has an aging population. Plus, there are less births among women 25 and younger, along with more women permanently remaining childless. Some find the numbers troublesome, since Michigan's birth rate has dropped below population replacement levels. MORE

Police chief says local ban on marijuana facilities is a good thing
 
A ban on recreational marijuana facilities has been proposed in Saginaw Township and it has support from a key member of the law enforcement community. Saginaw Township Police Chief Don Pussehl said he supports the proposed ban because of a concern about violence, citing a recent armed robbery at a medical marijuana facility in Genesee County. Saginaw Township is not alone is grappling with the issue. The municipality is one of 80 Michigan communities that have passed or are considering similar bans. MORE

73-year-old Michigan cyclist rides his seventh continent: Antarctica
 
Ann Arbor cyclist Al Newman was told his goal of riding Antarctica was unattainable. He had inquired with tour companies and they had turned him down. Then, a friend gave him a contact that helped him achieve his dream to cycle every continent. The 73-year-old and a guide were the only ones on the trip.
