Three outdoorsy activities to try this summer |
It seems like there are endless adventures to add to your summer bucket list and Michigan has no shortage of things to do this season. If you're looking for a few more outdoorsy activities to try this summer, check out these three things across Michigan. For spectacular views of Lake Michigan and the Kalamazoo River, try hiking the Tallmadge Woods Nature Preserve in Saugatuck. While in the Saugatuck area, listen to live music with a historic mansion as the backdrop during the Felt Mansion Estate concert series. Bring a light jacket, pack a lunch and get ready to set sail for a three-hour cruise of the Keweenaw Waterway. The Ranger III departs from the Isle Royale National Park’s Houghton Visitor Center and offers two summer cruises perfect for a historical adventure and sightseeing. |

How Utah’s pay-per-mile road funding system could translate in Michigan |
Setting an example: Drivers of hybrid and electric vehicles in Utah have the option to pay about 1 cent per mile driven instead of an annual registration fee. The state is four years into its pay-per-mile pilot program, which can save some drivers money while also making up for lost gas tax revenue for vehicles that use little or no fuel. Eventually, Utah plans to enroll all vehicles in the program. Michigan is considering a similar user-fee system to replace its gas tax and address its nearly $4 billion annual road funding deficit. Legislators have proposed spending $5 million to test out a voluntary program over a two-year span. Not like the other: The new Gordie Howe International Bridge set to open in 2025 is a cable-stayed bridge, while Michigan’s iconic 5-mile Mackinac Bridge is a suspension bridge. Both bridges may look the same, but here's a breakdown of the structural innovation that separates one from the other. |

Social work students can get $30K to pursue master’s degree |
Michigan students seeking a master’s degree in social work may be eligible for a $30,000 stipend from the state health department. The Department of Health and Human Services reported Tuesday, June 4, that it would provide 12 in-state universities with a total of $5 million in an effort to increase the state’s behavioral health workforce. Funding is available for up to 150 students. Awarded: The Kent District Library system announced last week it was one of five public libraries across the U.S. to receive the 2024 National Medal for Museum and Library Service from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The award is the highest honor given to libraries that make significant and exceptional contributions to their communities. In class: High schoolers got real-world construction experience and a school district received several facility upgrades thanks to a trade works program offered to students in Washtenaw County. |

Young child dead, mom hospitalized after 2 tornadoes hit Michigan |
Aftermath: Two tornadoes touched down Wednesday in different areas of Lower Michigan. One of the tornadoes downed a large tree onto a Livonia home, killing a 2-year-old child and critically injuring the child’s mother, according to the National Weather Service. The NWS estimates wind speeds were between 90 and 95 mph. This makes the tornado an EF-1 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale. A second tornado, rated as an EF-0, touched down in Crawford County, east of Grayling and northeast of Roscommon. Severe storms: The National Weather Service in Detroit conducted a damage survey around Livonia after reports of widespread downed trees and tornado touchdown in the area. A line of strong storms packing high wind gusts swept across the state Wednesday afternoon and early evening. Warm season: Although the “official” numbers haven’t been issued by the National Weather Service, Southeast Michigan just had a top-5 warmest springs. Take a look at how the temperatures this spring in southeast Michigan stacked up against previous springs. |

Unbelievable case of Michigan man driving in virtual court just got more unbelievable |
Behind the wheel: A man who became a viral internet meme for driving during a virtual court hearing has never had a license to drive in the state of Michigan. With much attention on the case and calls for public inquiry, Washtenaw County 14A District Judge Cedric Simpson and his staff determined Corey Harris has had only a Michigan state identification card since 1999 and has never obtained a driver’s license, despite statements that he had one, according to information presented during Harris’s court hearing June 5. On the run: A motorcyclist exceeded 100 mph to evade police before crashing Tuesday night, and he then proceeded to jump into the Flint River, police said. |

Michigan distillery launches new Pride month cocktail with a nod to WWII-era LGBTQ community |
Pride Month: Grand Rapids-based Long Road Distillers launched a new canned cocktail to honor Pride and the LGBTQIA community this summer. An in-house-only favorite for years at the cocktail bar on Grand Rapids’ northwest side, “The Friend of Dorothy” drink is now available throughout Michigan for a limited time. The name of the cocktail pays homage to a WWII-era euphemism used by the queer community to safely communicate about sexual orientation while avoiding hostility. How to celebrate: Whether it's Washtenaw County's annual flag raise or Kalamazoo's two day festival, there are several ways to celebrate Pride in Michigan. Here's how you can partake in Pride festivities in Kalamazoo, Washtenaw County and Genesee County. Unwind: This summer, Sunset Sound Healing sessions are being offered at The Inn at Bay Harbor. This resort near Petoskey boasts a hotel, cottages, golf courses, restaurants and a spa all tucked along Little Traverse Bay. |
