Where to celebrate Juneteenth 2023 across Michigan

Juneteenth is almost here which means many people throughout Michigan are gearing up to celebrate the holiday on Monday, June 19.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865 when Union Army Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger announced emancipation to Texas slaves. This announcement came two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation which freed all enslaved people within the Confederacy.

Michigan has a new state holiday, and it’s next week

A new holiday: Juneteenth, an annual celebration of the end to Black enslavement in America on June 19, 1865, is officially a statewide holiday after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed Senate Bill 50 on Wednesday.

The CROWN Act: Discrimination based on hair texture and race-based hairstyles like braids, dreadlocks and twists, is now illegal in Michigan thanks to a bill signed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

Gaining recognition: The state of Michigan would officially recognize seven ethnic and religious holidays if bills advanced to the full House on Wednesday become law.

Continued ‘noxious’ smell prompts class action lawsuit against Michigan egg-drying plant

Seeking justice: Adrian residents are taking to the courts to fight what they say has snowballed into more than a year of unbearable odors coming from a powdered egg plant a few blocks from their neighborhood — a facility whose operations have landed it in hot water with the city and state environmental regulators.

Full steam ahead: Gotion Inc. says a $2.4 billion, 2,350-job electric vehicle battery facility can move forward after a federal agency determined the project is outside its jurisdiction.

More in public interest: Construction on Michigan’s major highways could cause traffic slowdowns for weekend travelers, especially those coming to and from the southeast.

Golf ball-size hail, funnel clouds as storms sweep through Southeast Michigan

Hail stones as big as golf balls and funnel clouds that raced above the ground. Those are just some of the severe weather issues that swirled through several Southeast Michigan counties late Thursday afternoon and early evening as a storm system swept across part of Michigan.

It's still dry: Since Sunday’s doughnut-shaped rain swirl, there have been three days of showers and thunderstorms in some parts of The Mitten. Unfortunately, that has not stopped drought conditions that have been ongoing since early May.

U.P. weekend weather: This week was considered a soaker for much of the Upper Peninsula but the weather is looking up. The mornings could dip into the 40s. The day is expected to rebound with sunny skies and temperatures reaching into the 70s.

Three varsity coaches among many removed by Bay City schools to comply with labor law

On the sidelines: At least three varsity head coaches – and more than a dozen middle school coaches, assistant coaches and game staff personnel – were removed from their positions in athletics Thursday by Bay City Public Schools to comply with labor laws.

A reason to celebrate: Novi baseball used some late-game heroics to pull off a 4-1 extra inning win over Mattawan in Thursday's D1 state semifinal, sending the Wildcats to their first state title game since 1973.

Winner, winner: Second-ranked Hudsonville defeated No. 4 Northville, 2-0, in Wednesday’s Division 1 state semifinal showdown at Grand Ledge to secure their first championship game appearance in program history.
