Michigan hearings gave Trump campaign a venue to spread election misinformation Michigan legislative committees provided a platform this week for Trump supporters and the president’s personal lawyer to air unproven claims of election fraud and wild conspiracies that are now spreading across the internet. President Donald Trump directed millions of online viewers to a four-hour Wednesday night House Oversight Committee meeting attended by lawyer Rudy Giuliani and witnesses who shared testimony that has largely been disputed by Michigan election officials, judges and independent media reports. Michigan Bureau of Elections Director Jonathan Brater has previously said there’s no evidence of inaccuracies in the November election, other than “occasional human errors” experienced every election year. The state saw a spike for the week of Nov. 21, with more than 32,000 new claims. It's the largest spike in new cases that week for any state besides Illinois. The increase in claims was due to “layoffs in the accommodation and food services industry,” state officials said in their submission to the federal government. The increase comes after Michigan's three-week partial shutdown went into effect. But this new surge of claims is much smaller than numbers in March and April. The Michigan Court of Appeals upheld a judgment that Albion resident Chad Baase’s recall petition language was factual and clear and could move forward with the signature collection process. However, Baase said he doesn’t plan to continue the recall effort. Nor does he intend to collect the signatures necessary to recall Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, or Attorney General Dana Nessel either, despite his efforts to get petition language approved against each official. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II, chair of the COVID-19 Task Force on Racial Disparities, said at a press conference Thursday. “We took immediate action. Our state chose not to wait. Black Michiganders could not afford for us to wait,” Gilchrist said. Cumulatively throughout the pandemic, the case rate in Black populations in Michigan has been 40% higher than the rate among the white population, according to the report.
