In today's newsletter, drought rapidly expanding, Biden to visit Saginaw this week and 2 Michigan officers charged in traffic stop assault of semi-truck driver. |
It was a big weekend for Michigan sports. We'll start off in Detroit. The Detroit Tigers made their first cuts of spring training on Friday, reassigning their top pitching prospect to minor-league camp. Across the street, our sports writers told us how things are looking for the Detroit Lions ahead of the free agency. The MHSAA hosted a few state finals over the weekend. Here are the hockey state champions in Division 1, Division 2 and Division 3. State champions were crowned in boys swimming and diving this weekend in the Lower Peninsula, find those results here. Some news came out of Ann Arbor as Michigan hockey swept Notre Dame and advanced to the Big Ten semifinals. And Mike Hart is reportedly not returning to the Michigan football coaching staff. Lastly, Michigan State men's basketball closed its regular season with a loss at Indiana. The Spartans will open the postseason in Minneapolis on Thursday as the No. 8 seed in the conference tournament against No. 9 seed Minnesota in a second-round game. |

Michigan high school graduation rates bounce back: See your school’s rate |
According to the Michigan Department of Education: After a slight decline in graduation rates during the second and third full years of the COVID pandemic, Michigan high school students’ 2022-23 rates have rebounded to near record levels. At a 81.77% graduation rate, four-year term students set the second-highest rate in state history. Speaking of education: Michigan has one of the top 5 ranked science centers in the entire country. That’s according to USA Today’s 10Best ranking, which just listed the Michigan Science Center in Detroit as the No. 3 top science center in the U.S. for a second straight year. In health: Officials confirmed Friday that a child died of influenza, marking the virus’s first pediatric death of the 2023-24 flu season. |

Drought rapidly expanding across Michigan in past 2 weeks, see where you stand |
The latest map: We may not think of drought as possibly developing in our normally muddy time of year, but the drought status for much of Michigan is increasing. In the new drought status issued, the U.S. Drought Monitor has 91 percent of Michigan ranked as at least abnormally dry. Just three weeks ago the abnormally dry percentage was 55 percent. Get a rare look: On record since the early 1800s, Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks is making its way through our inner solar system on its every-71-years approach to our sun. It is now visible in the evening sky with the help of a telescope or binoculars — but as it gets closer in the coming weeks it will get brighter, and could potentially become visible to the naked eye. The countdown: The year’s biggest skywatching spectacle is now just one month away. On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will cross a significant portion of North America and a dozen U.S. states. Depending on one’s location, viewers will get to witness the moon either partially or entirely blocking the sun, creating an eerie and even profound scene. |

Migrant advocates, Democrats slam Biden’s use of ‘illegal’ during State of the Union speech |
What to know: Immigrant advocates and Democrats are slamming President Joe Biden for using the word “illegal” to refer to an undocumented immigrant in response to audience heckling during his State of the Union Address. Miss the speech? These were the Michigan tie-ins. President Joe Biden will visit Saginaw on March 14. The purpose of Biden’s visit is unclear, but it would come as campaign season for the November presidential election campaign ramps up across the U.S. More in politics: A bench warrant has been issued for Stefanie Lambert, one of three charged with alleged tampering of voting tabulators after the 2020 election, after she failed to appear in court on March 7. |

2 Michigan officers charged in traffic stop assault of semi-truck driver |
An update: Two Michigan police officers are facing charges related to the assault of a semi-truck driver who they allegedly pulled over, attacked and arrested while in uniform and outside of their jurisdiction, officials said. In Oakland County: A judge restricted the use of a phone and tablet by James Crumbley after he used them to make “threatening statements” from jail, authorities said Friday. On Thursday, prosecutors played a recording of a desperate 911 call by Crumbley as they tried to show jurors how he quickly determined that the teen might be the killer. A gun shop employee testified Friday that Crumbley knew what he was looking for when he bought a handgun shortly before the attack, telling her he’d had his “eye on it for quite some time.” |
