Michigan hits record recycling rate 3 years in a row |
On the up: State officials reported Michigan set a record high recycling rate for the third year in a row. That recycling rate rose from about 14% prior to 2019 to more than 23% today. An analysis by the state Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) forecast that at the current pace of change, Michigan is on track to meet the state’s goal of a 30% recycling rate by 2029. The latest: Michigan provided seven school districts with $4.2 million in grant funding to purchase cleaner, electric school buses in 2019. Five years after that pilot program, 61 districts have secured some degree of funding to bring the state’s electric school bus count to more than 300. Saving the wildlife: A Genesee County man has made news all across the country. William “Boski” Messenger, a Burton resident and business owner, posted a video on his social media saving a raccoon from choking on a piece of cheese in his backyard. Yes, you read that correctly. |

More details on weekend’s rain-wrapped Up North tornado |
To know: An EF-1 tornado touched down in Gladwin County on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service in Gaylord. Monday morning, NWS meteorologists released a public information statement on the storm, confirming its estimated strength and path. Over the last week, there has been much talk about the heat wave Michigan just experienced. Many meteorologists refer to the large-scale weather pattern as a “heat dome,” but what does that exactly mean? Be aware: Hazardous beach conditions are expected for all Lake Michigan beaches starting early Tuesday, lasting until the evening. Swimming is strongly discouraged, according to the National Weather Service. |

When lightning strikes, fans have to leave their seats, but the game doesn’t always stop |
What happened: In the dramatic final moments of a one-run game on Friday night, the seats at Comerica Park were largely empty. Fans had been told to leave their seats and seek shelter in the bottom of the eighth inning due to lightning in the area. Meanwhile, the game between the Detroit Tigers and Chicago White Sox was played to its conclusion with no interruption. It’s at least the second time fans have been obliged to leave their seats due to lightning warnings this year. Similar scenarios have occurred several times since 2019 at Comerica Park. “We’ve had it a couple times,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. “These storms roll in and they clear the lower bowl. That always gets a funny reaction in the dugout, like, ‘We’ll clear the lower bowl but you guys keep playing.’ I think everybody feels safe, but it’s funny when that happens.” |
