When is the last time you admired the great outdoors? |
For someone who has terrible seasonal allergies, I spend a fair share of my time outdoors. Morning walks with Pepper, my nine-year-old Standard Poodle, or catching a few sun rays on the back porch during lunchtime brings me inner peace. As a Floridian who will soon make the transition to the Mitten State, MLive's story about Michigan being a climate haven caught my eye (more on that below).
While we're on the topic of all things environment, who can forget the animals? The Detroit Zoo's newest resident, a 1-and-a-half year old red panda named Ginger, just made her debut in the Holtzman Wildlife Foundation Red Panda Forest. While welcoming a new furry face, the zoo also announced the passing of beloved trumpeter swan, Ron Swanson. Zoo staff say the 20 year resident "enjoyed spending time on on his private island in the middle of the lake with his mate, Leslie Knope." Yes, the feathered companions were named after the Parks and Recreation characters.
As the saying goes, "with every ending, there comes a new beginning." The Toledo Zoo is celebrating the birth of twin polar bear cubs. The cubs won't be seen by the public until March, but you can watch a live feed of the twins from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Youtube. |

Michigan is a climate haven in a warming world. Will everyone move here? |
On the move:Michigan looks increasingly attractive in a country where California wildfires are turning homes to ash and hurricanes are sinking houses in Florida. One expert thinks the Great Lakes, and Michigan in particular, will be the best place to live by 2050. What's a climate haven?: Climate havens are regions expected to avoid the worst outcomes of climate change and have the capacity to develop infrastructure for growing populations. The state’s two peninsulas have ample freshwater – the Great Lakes contain 90% of North America’s supply, lower temperatures, and vast swaths of undeveloped land. Experts warn an increase in population will eventually strain housing stock, box out affordable options and accelerate urban sprawl. |

Pistons owner Tom Gores donates 10,000 toys to Michigan families |
Spreading holiday cheer: The Pistons owner partnered with Toys for Tots, Voices for Children, and The Salvation Army Downriver Corps to donate more than 10,000 toys, bicycles, drones, tablets, and wireless headphones to families in Detroit, Flint, and surrounding neighborhoods for the holiday season.
Lance Taylor becomes highest-paid head coach in Western Michigan University's football history after signing a deal last week to lead the Bronco program. The 41-year-old Mt. Vernon, Ala., native is the 17th head coach in program history and will make $850,000 annually as part of a five-year contract that lasts through the 2027 season.

| Northern Michigan winery invites you to Sip, Soup, Ski this winter |
Shady Lane Cellars in Suttons Bay is expanding its popular winter soup and wine pairings by working with a local adventure outfitter that will rent out cross-country skis and bring them to the tasting room door.
What to know: Sip, Soup and Ski will be offered in January and February, weather-permitting. Guests can trek around the vineyard’s three miles of free trails. Or they can lengthen their adventure by using the winery’s connecting path to reach the Leelanau Trail, a 17-mile paved corridor that runs through farmlands and woods between Traverse City and Suttons Bay. One more winter activity: A winter trail for fat tire bicycles is being developed at Pioneer County Park north of Muskegon. |
