Weekend on wheels is Pure Michigan with pair of car-themed events
Michiganders love their cars. In fact, there are so many car lovers here, you can have two huge car-centric events on the same weekend in different cities and still get massive crowds attending both. The Vehicle City (Flint) and The Motor City (Detroit) each played host to killer car events this past weekend: Back to the Bricks and Woodward Dream Cruise, respectively. If you weren't among the thousands to attend either of these auto affairs, MLive's got you covered with plenty of pics and galleries of all the sweet rides that were on display. MORE

U.P. community shaken by plan to close prison

Losing a couple hundred well-paying jobs can be hard on any community. But it can prove devastating to a small community. Such is the plight facing the western Upper Peninsula communities that will be effected by the announced December closing of the Ojibway Correctional Facility in Gogebic County. One study shows the prison pumps $55 million annually into the local economy. That money will be hard to replace. Overall, closing prisons in Michigan has bipartisan support. Unless, of course, that prison is the economic generator of your community. MORE

Lions still searching, but at least it's the preseason

Well, the good ol' Detroit Lions don't look to be any closer to being, uh, good. Two preseason games into coach Matt Patricia's tenure (not to mention Year 3 under general manager Bob Quinn) and the early 2018 reviews are more bad than good. They lost a lackluster game Friday. Patricia had to search through the film Saturday for some positives. And by Sunday, Quinn was sifting the NFL scrap heap for players who have little chance of making the 53-man roster. (Sorry if we sound jaded. We've been watching the Lions for many, many years.) MORE

MSU's Williams determined to succeed after gun deaths of brother, cousin

Raequan Williams survived the violent streets of inner-city Chicago. His brother and cousin weren't so fortunate. The pain from their deaths rocked the Michigan State redshirt junior defensive tackle. But Williams is not giving up. He knows he has a golden opportunity to do what so many others before him couldn't do: Get out from under the circle of violence and stay out. He has the motivation to succeed, and MLive MSU beat writer Matt Wenzel has his story. MORE

Head-turning cosplay from inaugural Michigan Comic Con

OK. Confession time. We knew cosplay was a thing. We just didn't realize how big a thing. Thankfully, there's MLive cosplay beat writer Ed Pevos to keep us in the loop with what the kids are doing these days! Michigan Comic Con held its inaugural event Sunday in downtown Detroit. And, as fans are wont to do at such showcases, there were plenty of attendees donning the garb of their favorite fictional characters.
