In today’s newsletter, a decision is coming today in the shooting death of Patrick Lyoya, abortion-rights protestors disrupt the state legislature and Michigan will soon have a year-round horror town.

Making a left turn? If it's deemed unsafe, that's a civil infraction.

Roadways can be dangerous places. There are a bunch of large vehicles navigating traffic laws, pedestrians and other vehicles. A new law aims to correct a former oversight in roadway safety measures.

The new law makes it a civil infraction to cause a hazard on the roads by making a left-hand turn onto something other than an intersection. For instance, if you are taking a left turn from the road into your driveway, make sure traffic is clear before you turn. Yes, previously that was left out of the law books. 

If you are driving somewhere this morning, be careful out there on the roads.

Michigan moves to outlaw fake urine as marijuana popularity soars.

Wait, fake urine? Yeah, it's a thing. And this fake urine can hypothetically be purchased to cheat a urinalysis. Say someone gets a job and the employers wants to test for marijuana as a last step. They might buy a product like this.

An attempt to ban it: Michigan legislators want to make it a crime to use fake urine or other means to cheat employer drug screens. A pair of Senate bills would make it illegal to possess or distribute such products.

Speaking of the legislature: State lawmakers this week advanced a bill that would restrict conversations surrounding race or gender in Michigan public school classrooms.

A decision is coming today on potential charges in the Patrick Lyoya shooting.

Prosecutor to announce decision:Kent County prosecutor Chris Becker will announce this afternoon if Grand Rapids police Officer Christopher Schurr will be charged in the fatal shooting of Black motorist Patrick Lyoya.

How to watch the announcement: The press conference is scheduled for 3 p.m. Thursday at the Michigan State Police sixth district headquarters in Grand Rapids. The event will be livestreamed on Kent County’s Facebook and YouTube channels.

Abortion-rights protestors disrupted Michigan House proceedings yesterday.

A disruption in the gallery: Abortion-rights demonstrators lined the state House gallery, chanting above lawmakers as House leaders did their best to move through regular business and vote on bills. More than a dozen people yelled chants like “Abortion is a human right.”

Business as usual: As demonstrators yelled from the gallery, Speaker Pro-Tempore Pamela Hornberger, R-Chesterfield, attempted to direct proceedings as usual. Bills were read and votes were taken with only some acknowledgement of the ruckus from above.

'We all have to step into our power:' Paula Thornton Greear took over this week as the new president and CEO of Planned Parenthood Michigan. During a video interview this week, she discussed the Supreme Court leak, saying, "I think that they’re trying to take away the power over bodily autonomy."

The Detroit Lions are becoming a trendy team nationally. They don't care.

Excitement is building: It’s been almost a half-decade since the Lions finished outside last place in the NFC North. But they split their final six games down the stretch last season, then supercharged their offense with two speedy wideouts while adding six new defensive pieces in the draft. And just like that, expectations are rising.

Not that they care: “You know what, I don’t even feed into all that,” veteran safety Tracy Walker said. “Because last year, and my first four years, the media was bashing the Lions, I’m gonna be honest.”

A year-round horror town is being built in Michigan's Irish Hills.

Spooky all year long:It already looks like the set of a movie, and now a local filmmaker is turning Michigan’s Old West Stagecoach Stop at Irish Hills, southwest of Ann Arbor, into a year-round town of horrors.

Where to stay: When Monroe native Nate Thompson walked through the old attraction area recently, he says he immediately had a vision to turn the old storefronts into an actual ghost town. Thompson’s goal is to have HorrorTown up and running by Aug. 1.

Not into the spooky stuff? Perhaps you'll be more interested in a different restoration project. Belle Isle's old zoo area will be revamped and the DNR is seeking public input about the project.
