Let's get ready for the weekend. |
It feels hard to believe we've already made it to the end of the first week of 2024. As we ready for the weekend, check out a few events happening across the state. Before the weekend whips by, visit the Real Bodies exhibition at the Sloan Museum of Discovery or the Longway Planetarium in Flint. Whether you're into an exotic animal show or experiencing ‘The Godfather’ with a live orchestra, there's plenty to do in Ann Arbor. Head to the Dow Event Center for the Saginaw Spirits game and see the new $1 million LED “ribbon” board display. In Muskegon, enjoy open skating at Trinity Health Arena or listen to live tunes at the Frauenthal Center. |

Michigan needs 190,000 more housing units to curb a crisis |
Finding a home: The Michigan State Housing Development Authority estimates the state needs about 190,000 units to ease housing woes. Michigan is turning to unique ways to fix the crisis as vacation homes eat at supply, development costs are high and the number of households are increasing because the population is aging. Moving to Michigan: A new report by Uhaul says that Michigan ranks near the bottom when it comes to people moving to the state. The index is compiled by examining each state’s net gain (or loss) of one-way equipment from customer transactions in a calendar year. Also in public interest: Highland Copper, a Canadian company based in Quebec, will soon start construction on a new copper mine near the border of the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park.

New nature preserve with trails, rare habitat opens in Northern Michigan |
Permanently protected: Turtle Cove Nature Preserve, a 120-acre parcel of undeveloped land about 10 miles southeast of Traverse City, has officially opened. The preserve sits along Lake Arbutus and holds a rare shallow-water cove that provides critical nursery habitat for fish, amphibians and invertebrates. Lights on: Consumers Energy has launched its new Heartlands Farms Wind project in Gratiot County. The utility company’s fifth wind project features 72 turbines that will generate power for 80,000 households. No funds: For a second time, FEMA has rejected Michigan’s request for aid to recover from damage caused by flooding in the Upper Peninsula. |
