I'm always been inquisitive of speed eating contest champions. How do they prepare? What's the strategy behind eating so much food? What's the motivation behind it all? For 16-year-old Austin Brooks of Flushing, he's fueled by his second-place finish in the 2022 Flushing Coney Dog Eating Competition to one day win the competition. His determination paid off—he won first place in the Coney Dog Eating Competition at Bueche’s Food World on Tuesday, July 25. The teen said he tried not to eat anything before the 2022 contest. This year – it was all mental preparation. |

Michigan will accept out-of-state teachers, allow schools to help collect union dues |
Filling the gap: Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed legislation Wednesday, July 26, aimed at increasing the number of teachers in classrooms throughout Michigan. The laws, among other allowances, will permit Michigan to accept out-of-state teaching certifications and counseling licenses if they meet certain criteria. Unban the ban: Grand Rapids Public Schools rescinded its May backpack ban Monday and students and parents are largely in favor, but still have safety concerns heading into the new school year. More in education: Mott Community College will receive nearly $1.5 million from the U.S. Department of Labor to launch a pre-apprenticeship program in education, occupational skills training and employment for youth. |

Storm leaves more than 125,000 without power across Michigan |
Lights out: A storm with heavy rains and strong winds left more than 125,000 without power and flooded streets in some areas across Southeast Michigan. Wind gusts soared to 67 mph in Romulus, according to reports submitted to the National Weather Service in Detroit. In Muskegon: The heavy rain flooded a portion of Seaway Drive in Muskegon, forced temporary road closures and left some vehicles stranded on Wednesday, July 26.
