A story so sweet, you might get a cavity |
On Memorial Day, a Grand Rapids couple celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary. Can you believe that?! To put this milestone in perspective, reaching the 75th diamond anniversary is so rare that the U.S. Census Bureau doesn’t even keep statistics on how many couples reach it, but the federal agency notes only 1% of married couples reach their 60th anniversary. What’s the secret to a long-lasting, loving marriage? Communication? Honesty? Charmaine, 95, and Wayne Vickers, 98, say the answer just might be Cherry Coke. Read their story here. |

Michigan roads are deteriorating faster than they’re being fixed |
Michigan’s primary road system has deteriorated at a faster rate than it can be fixed in recent years. Road crews improved 16.2% of the state’s federal-aid roads between 2021 and 2023, but it wasn’t enough to counter the 21.2% that declined, according to the Michigan Transportation Asset Management Council’s 2023 roads and bridges annual report. This weekend: The Michigan Department of Transportation has 30 more road closures scheduled for Friday, May 31, through Sunday, June 2, on top of more than a hundred ongoing projects. More in transportation: The state will get about $25 million from the federal government to purchase cleaner alternatives to diesel buses through the 2023 Clean School Bus Program. Michigan is adding another 104 electric buses across 27 school districts. Here are the recipients. |

Trump becomes first former U.S. president convicted of felony crimes |
Donald Trump became the first former president to be convicted of felony crimes Thursday as a New York jury found him guilty of falsifying business records in a scheme to illegally influence the 2016 election through hush money payments to a porn actor who said the two had sex. Jurors convicted Trump on all 34 counts after deliberating for 9.5 hours. Praise and criticism: Reactions coming from the historic felony verdicts on Trump drew cautiously optimistic reactions from Michigan Democrats and frustration among state Republicans. Police have dismantled a Pro-Palestinian encampment at Wayne State University. The camp had been in place since May 23 with students and activists protesting the ongoing Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. At least 12 people were arrested on Thursday, according to the Associated Press. |

Michigan's weekend has warmer temps but also a split rain pattern |
This weekend has one period of rain moving through Michigan, but also some warmer temperatures. The rain system is a “split rain pattern.” There will be a southern storm system and a northern storm system. It's still spring: Memorial Day weekend might feel like summer’s big kickoff, but technically we still have a few weeks before the season begins. Here's what to know about the June 2024 solstice. Garden Talk: With the big Memorial Day weekend planting push behind us, many vegetable gardeners are now basking in the glow of their “finished” gardens. But don’t settle into a cruise-control mindset. Here are four garden tips to keep in mind this month. |

Aidan Hutchinson recalls epic chance encounter he had with Eminem at NFL Draft |
Two icons together: Aidan Hutchinson, on his House of Hutch Instagram page, is teasing what looks like his future podcast as he tells how he got to hang out with Eminem after missing the Detroit rapper when he visited Lions training camp, which was featured on an episode of “Hard Knocks." Speaking of the draft: Early economic data emerging from the 2024 NFL Draft in Detroit paints a picture of success beyond the record attendance numbers. The net economic impact of the draft in downtown Detroit was expected to exceed $160 million, according to pre-event projections from East Lansing-based consulting firm Anderson Economic Group (AEG). In basketball: The return of a Detroit-based women’s professional basketball team was left out of the recent WNBA expansion. But that isn’t stopping the Detroit Pistons’ attempts to bring a team to the Motor City, possibly even a revival of one of the league’s storied franchises. |

Auto worker who drove 25 millionth vehicle across Mackinac Bridge returns 50 years later |
Revisiting: It was May 21, 1974 when a 24-year-old General Motors employee on a motorcycle became the 25 millionth vehicle to cross the Mackinac Bridge. Fifty years later, Bob Kuchar made the trip again. Sliding down: The U.S. Coast Guard partnered with the S.S. Badger for fast-rope training on Lake Michigan. An aircrew from USCG Air Station Traverse City hovered a helicopter over the car ferry while USCG Maritime Security Response Team members slid down a rope to the ship's deck. Just in case: Hiking around Isle Royale is an amazing experience. But venturing into the island's wilderness is no regular walk in the park. And this time of year, it’s especially important for visitors to be prepared in case of a wildlife encounter. Here are some safety tips. |
