August 26, 2020 One thing we've heard a lot from readers during the course of the pandemic: The rules for what is allowed and what is restricted are confusing. Take this situation, for example -- you currently can't have more than 10 people at indoor gatherings in Michigan. But wait. What about restaurants? Well, that doesn't count. They just have to limit indoor guests to 50% of the building's capacity. Oh, and school is starting back up for many. That certainly isn't limited to 10 people. As you can see, the 10-person limit has a lot of exceptions. Gretchen Whitmer is holding firm. Whitmer, during a Tuesday press conference, said she was "not going to be bullied" into making a decision to reopen gyms, theaters and other businesses that are still required to remain closed in most of the Lower Peninsula. There is a glimmer of hope for those business owners, though, as Whitmer once again said she is closely monitoring the state's situation with COVID-19 to determine when they can safely operate again. Bill Cobb has filled his 25-acre property near Brighton with interesting antiques he's acquired over the years. “The joke is that I own every windmill that still exists in Michigan,” Cobb said. Even if he finds a windmill in need of repair, he is up for the challenge. Cobb fixes them too. The 72-year-old cancer survivor says the hobby keeps him "out of trouble." Flint Community Schools is the latest district to cancel all sports for the fall season over concerns regarding COVID-19. The district's impacted sports are cross country, golf, soccer, tennis and volleyball. Football has been postponed until spring after a previous statewide decision by the Michigan High School Athletic Association. The Lansing School District recently announced a similar fall-sports moratorium. MORE At least 500 fish -- likely more -- are dead after an equipment failure that overwhelmed an industrial wastewater facility, according to investigators. The Michigan departments of Natural Resources and Environment, Great Lakes and Energy say the Verso Corporation paper mill in Delta County is responsible for killing hundreds of fish in the Escanaba River earlier this month. At least a dozen fish species were found dead following the release of "black liquor," a high-strength organic pollutant made from breakdown of pulpwood.
