Michigan's top prescriber of oxycodone charged in $120 million healthcare fraud scheme

No doctor in the state of Michigan was prescribing more oxycodone than Francisco Patino in Wayne County. Now he's been charged in a $120 million healthcare fraud and money laundering scheme. The U.S. Department of Justice announced that Patino, 65, was charged in the superseding indictment with one count of conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud and wire fraud, one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering and one count money laundering. The indictment alleges that Patino induced patients to come to his clinics by offering unnecessary prescriptions for addictive opioids, of which he ultimately prescribed over 2.2 million dosage units. The trial is scheduled to begin on April 7. MORE

Mysterious death of bald eagle likely 'just an accident,' says DNR
hat
Two people walking a pathway near Grand Isle Marina in Grand Haven Tuesday came across a dead bald eagle. They contacted the Department of Natural Resources about the federally protected bird. But a biologist with the DNR says the death is likely just an accident. A scan showed no metal in the body or other signs that it was a shooting. Nearby overhead power lines appear a more likely cause of death. MORE

House in murder, cannibalism case sells to highest bidder

The man who bought the house had zero interest in talking to media after putting in the highest bid for the property where Mark Latunksi is accused of killing and eating parts of another man. The victim, 25-year-old Kevin Bacon, was found in a secret room in the basement. One of the bidders there on Wednesday said he was interested in the house as a "potential rental.". MORE

Tua Fsta
Should we be getting excited about Tua as the future QB of the Lions?
hat
Let's just look at this realistically. The Detroit Lions have the third overall pick in the NFL Draft. The first two picks are almost a lock to be Joe Burrow then Chase Young. The other truth? So many great quarterbacks in this league don't play right away. They're drafted and then mentored by veteran stars. So the Lions could totally take the incredibly electric Tua Tagovailoa, allow him to get fully healthy from his hip surgery and let him develop at natural pace under the tutelage of Matthew Stafford. And let's not forget, Stafford might not be going anywhere via trade, but he missed eight games last season and the Lions went 0-8 without him. Tua makes sense, right?  MORE
