Did you watch the gubernatorial debate last night? |
Last night, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Republican nominee for governor, Tudor Dixon, faced off in the first gubernatorial debate of the election season. Did you watch? If not, it's OK. We have you covered. The two women, who will face off at the top of ballot on Nov. 8, offered differing perspectives of — and visions for — Michigan. They also had plenty to say about how they've been portrayed by each other this election season. You can read a roundup of the debate from our political team here. And I've said it several times before in recent newsletters, but make sure to check the Vote 411 website for information on everything you'll see on the ballot. Candidates were invited to answer questions and their responses might provide some insight before you cast your ballot.

Speaking of higher education, officials are reacting to the resignation of MSU's president. |
A sudden resignation: Samuel Stanley, who was subject of an outside investigation by the MSU Board of Trustees into Title IX reporting, announced his resignation in a video message to the university community. He said he cannot continue serving in his role for a board that he said is interfering in those investigations. Gov. Whitmer and others surprised: Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and others reacted to the news with both surprise and concern. Whitmer, who earned her bachelor’s and law degrees from MSU, said it troubled her as "both a Spartan and as the governor of the state."
What Stanley said:"Like the Michigan State University Faculty Senate and Associated Students of Michigan State University, I have lost confidence in the current actions of the Board of Trustees,” he said in the video message. "I cannot in good conscience continue to serve this board as constituted." |

Prices are up 8.2% as food and housing costs kept September inflation hot. |
Inflation is not slowing down: U.S. consumer prices climbed 8.2% in a year from September to September, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Thursday, almost on par with August’s 8.3% increase.
Where are we seeing increases? Food, housing and medical costs played a big role in driving up prices last month. Food prices went up 0.8% in September hitting an 11.2% yearly increase. Grocery costs, or food at home, have climbed 13% in a year with cereals, dairy products and fruits and vegetables seeing some of the biggest hikes.
Need more income to deal with inflation? If you receive Social Security income, you will get an 8.7% boost in your benefits in 2023. |
