July 17, 2020 Across the U.S., there has been a referendum on Confederate symbols and place names with a history entangled in the enslavement of Black people. Here in Michigan, there are buildings, statues and even cities with names honoring slaveowners and figures who supported the oppression of Indigenous people. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer recently changed the name of a prominent state building, stripping its connection to territorial governor Lewis Cass, who was a slaveowner. His name, though, also has a connection to a county and a city in Michigan. Cass is just one example, with other controversial figures found celebrated across the state. Discussions are happening at protests, at government meetings and between neighbors about what should go and what should remain. The numbers have not shown the same connection to Black Lives Matter protests that have taken place across the state. With many Michiganders facing financial hardships due to the coronavirus pandemic, advocates and the courts are bracing for a flood of eviction cases. Those finding themselves without the ability to pay rent still have some potential protections in place, with the state setting aside money to appease landlords who allow tenants to remain in their residences.
