 Lyric Jerelous put out a plea on Facebook looking for Uber and Lyft drivers to take her to work in Muskegon. “You’re going to be hard pressed to find drivers out that way,” one driver told her. “The business out there is scarce,” responded another. Finding drivers has been a nationwide frustration coming out of the pandemic, as a driver shortage has raised prices and wait times for passengers and pushed drivers to travel further and chase promotional driving streaks to make up for wages lost over the last year. In April 2020, the nationwide number of rideshare drivers plummeted by 60%, according to data from Gridwise, a mobile application for rideshare drivers. That gap only widened during the spring of 2020 when the coronavirus pandemic brought living donations to “a near halt” and limited deceased organ transplant procedures to only the most dire of cases. Coronavirus brought new challenges to the transplant community, forcing it to alter how it procures donor organs, and adding new levels of risk assessment in evaluating which organs can be safely transplanted, all at a time when hospitals were constantly preparing for the next surge of COVID-19 patients.
