Senate cements auto insurance as top priority in first bill
Auto insurance reform has long been a bugaboo for Michigan lawmakers and their constituents. Substantive change may be on its way. Michigan Senate Republicans have tabbed overhauling the state's auto insurance laws as their top priority of 2019. Early details on Senate Bill 1 are sparse, however, as lawmakers will look to work through various issues in the committee process. Headlining the list of issues for most Michiganders is reducing auto insurance rates. Michigan annually has one of the highest rates -- often the highest -- for auto insurance in the country. MORE

Whitmer reconsiders paying attorney fees for Flint's former EMs
 
Former Governor Rick Snyder once agreed to partially reimburse Flint to help offset the cost of legal bills incurred by former emergency managers in connection with the Flint water crisis. That pledge is now under review by new Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. The state has paid Flint just $90,000 to date for those costs. Attorney fees for eight former emergency managers or city employees charged with water crisis crimes have topped $1 million each. MORE

Saginaw Heritage might already be in championship form. The defending Class A girls state champions have notched a number of impressive wins behind their tandem of returning Division 1 prospects. The Hawks would be No. 1 in our top 25 girls statewide rankings if it weren't for Detroit Edison, which features some quality D-1 talent of its own. In our boys top 25 statewide rankings, we've got Benton Harbor up top with Flint Beecher and a bunch of Detroit area schools filling out the top 10.
