Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson

Michigan sheriff gets nationwide praise for laying down baton and marching with protesters

For several nights, cities across Michigan have watched their downtowns overtaken by violence. Protests have started peacefully and some have remained that way. But in Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo and Detroit, vandals and police have clashed, resulting in tear gas, arrests and destruction. Tuesday night in Kalamazoo, protesters pleaded with police to join them but the crowd was ultimately tear gassed when they refused to disperse after the 7 p.m. curfew. Up in Genesee County though, a sheriff is showing the world another way. Chris Swanson's decision to lay down his helmet and baton and walk with those protesting the killing of George Floyd has turned him into a national spokesman for how police should respond to demonstrations. The praise came from all over the political spectrum. MORE

From gyms to hair salons, what are the riskiest activities right now?

No one is saying that the coronavirus pandemic is over. But with the stay-home order lifted and the state of Michigan opening back up, it's hard to know what's safe and what's not. Is going to the beach safer than going to the dentist? What about hair salons or the gyms that will open in the next month? Outside of what is legally prohibited or required, decisions on how to manage risk are up to you and your family. In order to help, we spoke with multiple experts and asked them to rank activities by coronavirus risk level. Here are those rankings. MORE

Michigan reports fewer than 200 new coronavirus cases for second straight day

For the first time since Michigan's first reported COVID-19 case in mid-March, we went two days in a row with fewer than 200 new cases reported. Michigan health officials reported 199 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday and 37 deaths. Fifty-four of Michigan's 83 counties reported no new cases. Having said that, for the first time since the start of the pandemic, Iron County in the Upper Peninsula reported a positive case. MORE

Jim Harbaugh Fsta
This is the Michigan football program in a time of social distancing
hat
Usually the Michigan football offseason is just Harbaugh tweets and national championship predictions. Ahhh, the good old days. But the 2020 offseason - due to the coronavirus pandemic - has been unlike any offseason in Michigan football history. The players can't practice. The coaches can't meet with players. Coaches say that took that into account when recruiting - finding "dudes" who were accountable and could train independently without someone looking over their shoulder. Recruiting isn't the only thing that's had to change though. EVERYTHING has had to change (and we still don't know what will happen this fall). MORE

Ypsilanti top grad
Without ceremonies to attend, top grads from around Michigan deliver moving graduation speeches virtually

It seemed like a given for so long. You graduate from high school, you get a cap and gown and go to your graduation ceremony. And those classic speeches! No matter the decade, there was always some bright-eyed teenager there to give us the dictionary's definition for the word success. The class of 2020 didn't get that. Their high school years ended early and abruptly due to the coronavirus pandemic and packing a football stadium or gymnasium right now still isn't safe. So we reached out across the state of Michigan and found those top graduates, those bright-eyed teens who still wanted to give their graduation speech. Bless their hearts, here it is: VIDEO
