Michigan state park officers begin push to carry firearms on job
Michigan state park officers have dangerous jobs, and need to be allowed to carry firearms, according to their labor union. Playing off the Michigan tourism ad campaign Pure Michigan, the Michigan State Employees Association has declared that working conditions for park officers are "Pure Danger." The union is pushing for adequate training and equipment, including firearms, to keep park officers safe in face of an "escalating" number of incidents within state parks. The Department of Natural Resources is looking into the request, but disputes the claims of rising issues with unruly park patrons or that state parks are unsafe. MORE

No answer yet on what caused train derailment in Kalamazoo

The cause of a train derailment earlier this week in downtown Kalamazoo remains under investigation, and it may be a while until investigators learn what went wrong. The 15 cars that overturned around 6:50 a.m. Tuesday morning were not carrying cargo. However, it took until 9:30 p.m. that night to bring all the cars upright. Roads in the area finally were opened around 10 p.m. Of course, trains blocking streets in Kalamazoo is nothing new to residents of this Southwest Michigan metropolis. MORE

Looking for some relief from the early summer heat? Head to your favorite Great Lake and take a soak. Know this, however: it might feel more like bath water than a refreshing plunge at some of our beaches. Surface water temperatures in four of the five lakes — way to be different, Superior! — are much higher this week than long-term averages for this time of year. MLive chief meteorologist Mark Torregrossa has the breakdown on each of the Great Lakes - even Lake Ontario. And, let's be honest, it doesn't border Michigan, so how "great" can it really be? MORE

All in all, it was an excellent showing from the group. U-M beat reporter Aaron McMann has the full breakdown. MORE

Up North ferry has been in operation since 1883

On your next Up North excursion, book a ride on the Ironton Ferry. The ferry costs three dollars per vehicle and shaves about 25 minutes off a 30 minute drive around Lake Charlevoix. While the drive around the lake has its own charm, a cheap ferry ride is like a trip through time. MLive water transportation beat writer Ed Pevos has all the neat details about a ride on the "Charlevoix."
