July 8, 2020 Michigan is spearheading a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Education and Education Secretary Betsy DeVos over the distribution of funding under a federal coronavirus relief package. According to the federal government, $13 billion in emergency coronavirus-related education funding has been distributed to school districts across the country for things like sanitization, purchasing educational technology and training teachers to use online tools. But state officials say the guidance the U.S. Department of Education issued on how to actually distribute those funds runs contrary to the law and pushes money toward private schools. While the majority were peaceful, some protests turned destructive. Gatherings are still taking place in Michigan communities, where residents are discussing the Black Lives Matter movement and the concept of police reform. They are now subdued gatherings, mostly, with smaller crowds. But in late June, an incident involving police and protesters sparked renewed anger and questions about the state of the relationship between police and the public. The former golf course was purchased by Harbor Springs-based non-profit Little Traverse Conservancy on Earth Day (April 22) and now it's open to the public. The organization has changed the activity lineup at the 280-acre preserve, but they kept all the beauty intact. Hikers, cyclists and birdwatchers will all feel right at home on this piece of land overlooking Little Traverse Bay.
