 Michigan currently has among the nation’s highest COVID-19 case rates and ranks No. 1 in the seven-day average for hospitalizations. Yet the state’s vaccination rate continues to lag the national average, based on data from the federal Centers for Disease Control. Michigan currently ranks 35th among the 50 states in percentage of residents who have obtained at least dose of vaccine: 62% of Michiganders are at least partially vaccinated and 56% are fully vaccinated compared to national averages of 72% and 61% respectively. Those relatively low vaccination rates are contributing to the current crisis among Michigan hospitals, which are being overwhelmed by a record number of in-patients.
