Try something new this month |
The start of another month can often inspire us to try new things like picking up a hobby or venturing to a local restaurant to experience a different cuisine. If you haven't tried golumbki, Kibby Cobb Liquor & Deli in Jackson is the place to go. The traditional Polish dish consists of cabbage rolls stuffed with rice, onion, egg, beef and pork. The deli also creates bagels, soup and sandwiches. For a unique twist to your cup of coffee, get a taste of Yemen at Sana’a Coffee House in Ypsilanti. The recently opened shop serves traditional coffee drinks along with Yemeni options like Adeni chai— a black tea blended with cardamom and cream. |

Michigan woman dies from rare brain disease that’s 100% fatal. She’s not the first. |
Quick decline: Everything was normal for Arlene VonMyhr, until it wasn’t. The 55-year-old West Michigander developed what seemed like stroke symptoms but hospital doctors sent her home undiagnosed. She had developed Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease – a rare degenerative brain disease. It’s always fatal, its victims are mostly random and there is no cure. What's CJD?: Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, or CJD, is an aggressive brain disorder that causes dementia with symptoms like memory loss, trouble speaking, balance issues and jerky movements. It goes downhill quickly, causing people to die within months. How common is it?: In the United States, CJD occurs in one to two people per one million a year, but risk increases with age, affecting five per one million people who are 55 and older. |

Michigan Republican congressman suggests nuking Gaza ‘like Nagasaki and Hiroshima’ |
In response: A video circulating on social media appears to show Michigan U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg suggesting nuclear weapons be dropped on Gaza, similarly to how bombs were dropped on two Japanese cities during World War II. However, the Republican congressman’s office said he was speaking metaphorically “to show urgency to defeat these enemies swiftly,” the Washington Post reports. "In Harm's Way": A new report released Thursday, March 28 calls for the repeal of Michigan's Parent Rights Restoration Act, stating that the parental consent law for abortion is harmful to youths and violates their rights. More politics: Former Portage Councilwoman and mayoral candidate Lisa Brayton pleaded guilty Thursday to a charge related to a residency issue that led to a judge removing her from the ballot last fall. |

On the ice: No. 3 seed Michigan dominated No. 1 seed Michigan State in a 5-2 win Sunday night in a Maryland Heights Regional final at Centene Community Ice Center in suburban St. Louis. That sends the Wolverines to the Frozen Four for the third straight year. Another win: Andy Ibanez hit a pinch-hit single to score the go-ahead run in the ninth inning and lead the Detroit Tigers to a 3-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Sunday afternoon at Guaranteed Rate Field. Looking for a night hike? Muskegon Luge’s 4-mile trail system keeps the lights on |
Night owls: Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park in Muskegon keeps its cross-country ski and snowshoe trail open, groomed and lit every night for hikers. The trails have marked trail heads, lights, maps with time and distance estimates to keep you on pace, and make sure you don’t get lost in the woods. Speaking of trails: Washtenaw County's Border-to-Border Trail will continue to expand in 2024. Plans include a new segment along the Huron River that links all three area metroparks, a long-awaited link between Ann Arbor’s Bandemer Park and Barton Nature Area and more trail growth in western Washtenaw County. Also in Muskegon: Plans for a former rail line along Muskegon Lake include improvements and expansion of the Lakeshore Trail paved path. But first, the city must get state and federal approvals and address some contaminated areas. |
